Oh, that's very good. *Her Suitably Impressed Face is something out of an etiquette manual, all demurely raised eyebrows and big eyes. When she breaks, she looks like hardly the same person at all*
Truthfully, that simply makes me think even more of you. I've met some truly useless, pathetic men, but I have to say Mr. Scott makes an impression. What a poor, bedeviled man, he couldn't possibly be asked to care in the slightest about his daughter. She's so very self-sufficient, you see. What can he do? Poor thing.
I don't think she ever expected much help on his part, regardless. What does she need to press charges if she's not of age? I'm sure he could still be persuaded, if he doesn't need to physically be here long for it.
She's over the age of fourteen and so can, in theory, petition the DMLE regardless, though it's questionable if they would choose to hear it. Hogwarts stands in loco parentis, but it's also questionable whether we can petition on her behalf on those grounds, even before you consider the long history of Hogwarts specifically not doing that. That said, it's not impossible that, once the decision to prosecute has been made, the father's presence is no longer strictly required. I would have to speak to a lawyer to be sure.
It sounds like there are some options then, at least, that we can explore and see if she's comfortable taking any of them. If her parents can't be relied on they can hopefully at least be managed. Mr. Scott, I wager, would be happy enough to go along with anything he's told, so long as he can return to his real life with a pat on the head to clear his conscience. It didn't sound much to me like her mother will make much of an appearance at all.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Perhaps the trick to it is selecting a language the other person doesn't speak. I could try again in Romanian?

Spun ceva foarte profund și impresionant în limba poporului meu.

At least I've made a good impression on someone today.
I told Sylvie's father to get the hell out of my office while disparaging his parental skills.

And never once questioning why a literal child might need to be self-sufficient.

I'm sorry, I'm being extremely unkind, I've only met the man once and hating him isn't helpful.

Mm. I was supposed to be talking him in to helping Sylvie press charges and instead all I managed was losing my temper.
