I love this quote by John Wesley, “The Gospel of Christ knows no religion, but social; no holiness but social holiness.” As a Christian, you can do no greater thing than to find an empty soul sitting on an empty bench, and occupy their heart with words and action while you occupy the bench with them. True evangelizing means reaching out with your time, energy and talent to spread your soul onto another. Not in the name of God verbally, but in the name of God spiritually. “Preach the Word of God at all times, but use words only when necessary.”

I believe your spirituality as a Christian is always shown best in your bravery to act your faith into reality. I mean: taking the courage to look a man in the face, smile, and nod in greeting while you’re walking down the street. Do we ever actually do it? That is emotional courage. Sitting down with a homeless woman on a bench and talking to her: learning her life story. That is emotional courage. Jesus did not hang with the rich. He loved being around the poor: the used, abused and totally screwed up. Emotional courage is spiritual strength: Spiritual strength to spread love without boundaries. Because having the courage to do the small things opens up the gateway to the large ones. Mother Teresa once said, “You cannot do great things, only small things with great love.” I believe this.

I believe that to be a true Christian is to know that you should not fight the world for God. Christians often forget that God called us to be the
”body of Christ” on earth. Christ never condemned another for his beliefs. The “faith journey” that Christians are called to undertake revolves around the acts of love toward neighbor and enemy, toward understanding and uplifting them.

To act as a Christian, I believe it means understanding that no one has the same beliefs as you, nor should they. Everyone will be different. And if you resist learning from an Atheist-a Jew-a Muslim-a Buddhist-a Hindu-etc. because of their beliefs, than you are wasting your time with what God has presented to you. Everyone is an individual, but yet we are all connected. And no matter how many Jehovah Witnesses walk the planet, everyone will never believe the same way about God. But this is good. People need differences to gain appreciation of each other. How you deal with those differences shows how faithful you are to God.

When I say spread love with no boundaries, I mean what I believe. There is no man or woman in God, there is no Christian or non-Christian, there is no black or white, heterosexual or homosexual in God. None of it is different in God’s eyes. We were created equal. If God wanted us all the same-spiritually, sexually, physically, emotionally-then why would he create us all different? Accepting, understanding and loving what was created in His image is the first step to breaking barriers down. Physical, political and sexual barriers: all of these barriers and more. This Universal Force that we call our God created us to unite, not to divide. If a gay man truly loves another gay man, then will we deny them their love? Will God? Hopefully we have learned too much about segregation to answer that question with a yes. God unites when another person invites the stranger in. Don’t be afraid of the unknown.

Unity starts with the small acts. It begins with one person connecting to another. And this is not an abstract idea, either. “Connecting” with a person is not abstract. Say, hello, and begin your courage. If you sit with yourself all day, then how do you expect to find God? I believe that spirituality is not realized within yourself, but with the communion of yourself with another. I’m not talking about marriage, sex or other acts of that kind of love. I’m talking about spiritual courage to reach out to those that are too afraid to reach back. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in this world.” The courage to act as The Body of Christ to another in need is the greatest manifestation of the Christian spirit that there is.
