Paul Martin spoke at my school this afternoon. He talked about the international financial crisis for about 20 minutes, and then took questions from the audience for the next hour.
I found him to be intelligent, funny and genuine.
He wore a white ribbon pinned to his lapel.
He admitted when he did not have an answer.
After, I had the opportunity to shake his hand. I told him that his speech on same-sex marriage was the most inspired I have ever been by a Canadian politician, and thanked him for it. He looked touched and told me it was an important speech to him too, that he'd worked hard on it.
I got a picture with him. It captures him in much less than a flattering light.
But I'm glad I got to hear him speak and meet with him, even if very briefly. He did not meet all my expectations of him as my prime minister, but I liked him. I still think he was better than the prime minister we have now.
And then I went to my last class. 45 minutes late.
No regrets.
