This morning I had the misfortune of running into someone from my old job on the V platform. This woman's office was across from my cube, and I'd spoken to her several times, done copyediting for her, even admired her son, who's Nathan's age. She passed me by without acknowledging me, without even recognizing me ( Read more... )

non-recognition can happen for lots of reasons, but even if you didn't have a new job, it's her (or hypothetical their?) loss. hug!

I was also in a bad mood because I was reading Octavian Nothing vol. 2. It's a good book, but it always gets me down.

I love that the book pretty much never lets up and always keeps pushing. I can see why it's a depressing read for a lot of people, but I find it exhilarating in how it articulates all those important things, and with respect to Octavian's voice in general.

Attach no weight to a would-be snub in NYC: something about the very air turns people inwards.

I've spent a twenty minute ride looking at a current coworker- without it clicking it was her. Shrug.

Today on the metro I 3 feet from a coworker I had just spent 2 hours in an office with. It took me 10 minutes to realize this. I could reach out my hand and touch him, but still didn't notice. I think I need to pay attention more.

Maybe she did recognize you but a) wasn't sure and didn't want to risk freaking out a total stranger or b) didn't say anything because she was embarassed that you'd lost her job when she hadn't. Or maybe she'd just had drops put in her eyes and couldn't see properly, or maybe she's just terrible with faces (like me), even faces of people she knows. I bet if you'd spoken to her she would have known who you were after a second and would have been quite glad to hear you've found a new job.

Oh Sims, you always destroy my pity party by being all logical and reasonable. :)

It's true, though. She was never in that often, what with a new baby and all. I could easily have spoken to her myself. The people I really fear running into are the ones who actually got rid of me.
