I finished my book earlier this evening, so now I have no excuse not to sew! Which is a good thing, since Anna is back on starting today. After the motif I finished today, there are 9 motifs left on her, which is about 18 hours total. My goal, really, is to do one motif a day, but I know I won't be doing any on Thurs. Maybe I can make up for it on Friday?
The nice thing is that, at least where I am right now on Mary Poppins, I'm not using the sewing machine at all, so I can leave it set up for embroidery. Of course, even once I do get to sewing, I can always use the Viking instead of the Brother. I've really gotten very used to using the Brother over the last year, though!
I did do more work on Mary Poppins today, too. I cut out the last eight panels of organza for the skirt. Unfortunately, this only leaves me with 20" left to do the whole bodice, which definitely won't work, so I guess I need to place another Dharma order. I'm also leaning more towards white organdy for the base layer instead of the red lining fabric, which means an order for Vogue fabrics, too. Anyway, I'm serging together all these organza layers instead of sewing, and I now have all four white organza layers assembled, plus the organdy layer. I'll probably be gathering them next, because I think I want to put them in a waistband before I hem them, but I can't decide whether I want to gather them all as one layer, which usually goes nicer into the waistband, or whether I want to gather just a couple layers together, so I get more body. I'm leaning towards the latter.
While waiting for fabrics to arrive, though, I think I'm going to move on to parasol trim, and painting shoes. I've decided to repaint my old character shoes pink, like the movie shoes, and pair them with white spats, which I also need to make. I might start on the swiss waist, too.
To be honest, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with just how many pieces there are to this outfit, so I'm making a list to (hopefully) clear my head:
- Skirt, consisting of seven layers. Top layer has appliques.
- Bodice. Should it have a structured underlayer with boning, or just let the swiss waist take care of that? 3/4 length sleeves, and appliques. Zipper back closure?
- Swiss waist, with hook/bar closures and lots of piping
- Hat - already painted. Needs to be covered/draped in organza.
- Fingerless lace gloves. I had actual Mary Poppins gloves once. Do I still?
- Parasol. Needs trim.
- Shoes - Need to be painted
- Spats - white with red buttons
