12/09 Ian R Macleod - Song of Time

I was rather blown away by this book. It begins with the heavy atmosphere and dulled senses of a long British summer, in a style one might expect from Kate Atkinson. I was hooked immediately. The protagonist is a musician, her husband a volcanic conductor. They inhabit the world of the rich and talented, but it doesn't do them much good in the end. Behind the family drama is a post-semi-apocalyptic world, with casual reference to the kind of futuristic gadgets that some authors might spend entire novels imagining. But the family drama is always at the forefront. Time and scientific advances take a back seat, in a style diametrically opposed to that of (say) Ken McLeod's The Night Sessions.

Kate Atkinson on speed. I loved it.
