Hey, guys. I've been writing this story lately and since I really have no where else to post it, I hope you all will read it. It's called "Alternate Universe" and it's about a young woman and her re-occuring nightmares/dreams. It has three chapters so far and I'll probably keep updating three chapters at a time. Even if you don't read it. ;) Ok, well, without further ado, here is "Alternate Universe". (Follow zee link.)
"Alternate Universe"
Julie
Chapter 1.
“Annie, please-“ Kate said softly, beckoning her younger sister to her.
“No! You don’t get to say that, bitch! Stay the fuck away from me!” Anne screamed, the rain pounding on them with fierce velocity. She then shakily raised the pistol at Kate, her hands trembling like a leaf and her eyes shining with flames.
Kate’s eyes widened with unknown fear at the sight of the gun. Shaking her head and lifting her hands in front of herself, she quivered with panic. Her round sapphire eyes met Anne’s jaded orbs and could have sworn she saw red flecks.
Tears cascaded down both of the sister’s faces but were unacknowledged due to the unwavering downpour of the heavy rain. Kate sobbed heartily and collapsed into a heap in front of her sister.
Anne’s grip on the revolver tightened, her nails digging moon-shaped crescent marks into the soggy palm of her hand. She aimed it at her weeping sibling, tears clouding her already blurry vision.
“Stand up, whore!” She yelled, fury engulfing her entire being.
Kate did nothing, she just sat there crumpled, all of her will to fight back leaving her empty. Her hoarse whimpers filled the night, but only to be out stung by the loud crashes of thunder being thrown their way.
The lightning struck in white flashes, causing Anne’s soggy head to whip up. But when her fiery gaze held Kate’s form once again, she did the very next thing that entered her twisted mind. She aimed and shot.
May sat up strait in her bed, the sound of a gun shot fresh in her ears. She looked around in a panic, expecting to see a dark ally and pouring rain. But she was only greeted by the sight of her cream colored bedroom and canopy which hung in a halo around her bed.
Shaking her head in denial, May carefully lied back down onto her bed, flashes of her dream still bright in her mind. She cringed at the memory, cursing her re-occurring dreams which never seemed to decease. With a sigh, she delicately parted the drapes of her white canopy and swung her legs around to the side of the bed.
She just sat there for a moment, trying desperately to stop the dreadful memories but with no avail. Cupping her face with her palms, she didn’t even realize that she had been crying until she felt the wetness of a tear drop on her cheeks. Pulling back a digit, she carefully scrutinized the drop of water on her finger and then dismissed it with a sweep of her palms on her features.
While wiping the caked on tears away, May got up slowly, still reeling from her nightmare. This is the worst one yet, she though idly. They would usually have the two sisters, Kate and Anne, and a sibling’s quarrel. But they never were killed in the end, she reflected, stopping dead in her tracks to the bathroom.
Why is this one so different?, she pondered, re-continuing her path to the bathroom. Usually they were in a big fight and they said nasty words or hurt each other, she observed while washing the morning grog out of her pale face.
Drying her face with a violet hand towel, May stared at her reflection in the mirror. Touching the apparent bags under her azure eyes, she flinched away at her own contact. What’s wrong with me? Her mind screamed, wanting it to be like before. Before she started having these awful nightmares.
Sighing once again, she picked up the comb at her side and brushed it through her long dirty blonde hair. Setting it back down, she pulled her locks into a messy bun and glanced at her expression yet again. She put on a happy smile for the mirror, but it faded into a frown when she realized that she couldn’t even fool herself.
While putting the faintest trace of make-up on, May dared a final look at herself before continuing to get dressed. But with a sob of depression, she knew that she couldn’t handle what she had become to look like these days. So without a glance at the looking glass staring her in the face, she fled the confines of her bathroom to the security of her bedroom.
Chapter 2.
“So, May, have you’re dreams been happening more often lately?” Jared, May’s therapist asked her, giving her the look that had many other meanings other than skeptical.
Glancing at him, she sighed when she noticed his disbelieving look. But weren’t all therapists disbelieving most of the time?
“Yes, Jared, they have been happening more often and they have been getting worse.” She replied in an exhausted tone, staring him strait in the eyes which she knew he hated.
Jared glanced at her from the tips of his glasses, and scribbled something on a yellow pad. He then cocked an eyebrow at her and pushed his spectacles up his nose. “Hmmm….” He said thoughtfully, putting his hand on his chin and looking as if he was pondering something.
“What, hmmm….?” May asked, in an exasperated sigh.
“I was just wondering… if you are just imagining these dreams.”
“Imagining? That what a dream is! Imagining!” May yelled, outraged.
Brushing her off with a flick of his wrist, he motioned for her to sit down. “Calm down, dear. I was only making an observation.” He said soothingly.
May, still brassed off about it, sat down in a huff, crossing her arms like a child would.
“Okay, May, could you please explain again to me what you’re first dream was like?” Jared asked, taking his glasses off his nose and polishing them with his shirt tail.
Closing her eyes in hopes to remember it better, May lied down on the maroon colored couch and folded her hands in her lap. Scrunching her delicate plucked eyebrows in confusion, she went back to the first horrific dream she ever had.
“Anne? Anne? What are you doing?” Kate asked, startling her younger sibling.
Anne’s head whipped around in a fury of brunette locks, making Kate slightly jump back in her stance. Kate’s eyes widened in horror at what she saw her baby sister doing.
“What?” Anne asked with rage, tossing the needle across the room and covering the miniature hole on the inside of her arm with her palm.
Kate winced at the crash the glass needle made when it made contact with the wall and focused her eyes on the kit Anne had in front of her. Kate’s pupils watered with tears and grabbed Anne’s sore arm.
“Hey! Watch it!” Anne cried in hurt, flinching because of the pain.
Kate didn’t even acknowledge her sister, and twisted Anne’s body with her hands, grabbing hold of her arms in a powerful grip. Once Anne was in contact with Kate’s angry, tearful blue eyes she was given a good shake by Kate herself.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!” Kate screamed in rage, throwing Anne’s weak body across the floor, making Anne cry out when she hit a table.
Anne’s eyes widened in fear as she saw Kate’s figure angrily making her way towards her prone form. She then curled up into a ball, trying to escape her sister’s wrath.
Hauling Anne’s frail body up with a dominant clutch, Kate pulled on her chestnut strands, forcing her to look into her face. “What were you doing, Anne?” Kate inquired in a sweet voice hinted with venom.
“I-I was…” Anne faulted, squeaking with pain when Kate pulled on her greasy tresses again.
“What? Tell me!” Kate yelled, tears freely dripping down her cheeks onto Anne’s cheeks, mingling with Anne’s tears.
“I’m-I’m sorry…” Anne’s whispered, right before she blacked out from Kate’s hit.
Kate pushed away Anne’s prone form and wiped eagerly at the salty water on her face. “You should be.”
And with a sniffle of regret, Kate left Anne’s room.
May opened her watery eyes and looked toward Jared who was studying her closely.
Jared then coughed loudly and nodded and then scribbled a couple of more things on his yellow pad. After finishing taking his notes, he set the pad aside and put the pen behind one of his ears. He leaned forward on his knees and studied May again, which made her uncomfortable.
“So?” She asked, trying to avoid his prying eyes.
“Honestly, May, I do not know what you’re dreams symbolize. I could tell you that they are because of stress, or they are just a phase in you’re life, but I wont because I do not think that is what they are. And I do not think I am the one you should be seeing.” Jared finished, taking the pad of paper again and writing something on a fresh piece and giving it to her.
May took the piece of paper and read it carefully. She looked up at him with wide eyes and a nod. Right now, she was desperate. Any help she could get was helpful.
“Thank you.” She carefully said, putting the paper in her purse and zipping it up. With another glance at Jared, she smiled weakly and stood up and walked out of the room.
Chapter 3.
May stared at the house from her car windshield. She then looked at the scrap of paper in her hand with the address on it. Making sure it was the correct address, she got out of the car and walked up the unknown driveway.
Once reaching the front door, her trembling hands rang the doorbell and waited patiently. After a couple of moments, the door swung open to reveal a slightly aging woman with dark chocolate eyes. Her hair was gradually graying from what May could tell and it was pinned up in a light twist with a colorful clip. She smiled warmly at May and ushered her in.
“Hello! You must be May. Jared informed me you would be visiting me. It’s so nice that you did.” And with another smile, the woman closed the door to her home and pushed May lightly into from what she could tell was her living room.
Sitting on one of the dark brown leather couches, she motioned May to do the same. After May was sitting stiffly on the opposite couch, the woman grinned happily at her.
“My name is Lynn by the way. And again, I’m so happy you decided to come. I think I could really help you with you’re dream problems.” After a slight beat, she lifted a pitcher of liquid and offered it to May. “Lemonade?” She asked, studying May with her coffee orbs.
May smiled at Lynn and shook her head. “No, thank you. I’m fine.”
Lynn nodded with a small smile and set the pitcher back down. And just as she was about to say something, she was interrupted by a beeping noise coming from what May guessed the kitchen. She shook her head with another grin and stood up.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Those are my cookies. I’ll be back in a jiff.” And with a smirk, she left the room.
May took this time to study her surroundings. She noticed that the house had a very warm feel. Just like Lynn. The couches were large and puffy, the deep brown leather making it feel almost ancient. The walls were a dark maroon color with odd paintings adorning them. Getting up and studying them closely, she noticed that they we’re of all different types of artists.
Some were Dali and others were Van Gough while there were others she couldn’t quite name since it had been a couple years since her art class in college. Taking a step back, she looked at more of the room. There was no television in this room, which made it even more peaceful knowing there is no interrupting while they are in here.
The coffee table was a deep mahogany wood that shone in the dull light from the standing lamp in the corner. The curtains were not open, but a sliver of light escaped through the two pieces of fabric landing on an end table in the other corner of the room. Walking over to it, May looked at the objects on it. There was a pentagram pendant surrounded by little transparent stones on an embroidered cloth.
Touching the cloth lightly, May didn’t even realize Lynn had come back in with a plate full of cookies.
Lynn stopped in her tracks when she saw May’s fingers calmly grazing her cloth. With a sweet smile, she set the cookies on the coffee table, making sure not to interrupt May who seemed captivated by the piece of fabric.
Walking up behind her, Lynn sensed her essence flowing out of her in waves. She had so much emotion and it seemed to be breaking past the dam and into Lynn’s head. Swaying slightly behind May, she touched her head to stop the dizziness.
When May noticed Lynn fumbling behind her, it seemed to break the trance. She turned around and quickly helped Lynn find her balance. “Oh, my God, are you okay?” May hurriedly asked, leading Lynn back to one of the couches.
After sitting her down, she May sat next to her, watching Lynn closely. Lynn then looked at May and touched her cheek with a somewhat shaky hand. “I’m fine, dear. Don’t worry about me. You should worry about you. When I walked up behind you I felt you’re aura and it pulsed within me. You gave me a slight dizzy spell, all that emotion. But I’m fine.” She ended with another smile, dropping her hand to her lap.
May looked at her oddly, not sure what to say. “Umm…”
Shaking her head, Lynn took May’s had within hers. “No need to say anything, dearie. I’m here to help you. Now, I want you to relax and calm you’re mind.”
Nodding, May closed her eyes and tried to relax her thoughts. She then felt Lynn’s somewhat wrinkly hands hovering around her temples, almost as if she was requesting access. And then she felt it. Another presence in her mind. It was incredible. It was empowering. It was calming. So with a sigh of relaxation, May sat back while Lynn invaded her thoughts.
Lynn was overwhelmed. This young woman had so much going on in her mind that she was surprised that she even had time to think. Lynn had never felt anybody with so much worry, doubt, fear and sadness ever before. Especially this young. So, she searched through May’s head and looked for what she was probing for.
With a gasp, Lynn’s mind was penetrated with tons of horrible images from what she could only guess were May’s said dreams. She flinched at the pictures and released May’s brain with another gasp. Her eyes shot open and glanced to May’s, whose eyes were slowly drifting open when she felt the loss of contact.
Lynn just gazed at May in marvel that the young girl could live with all of this. And she was now determined that she had to help this young woman. So with a sigh, Lynn took May’s hand again in hers and squeezed it evenly. “I’m so sorry honey that you have to deal with this. And I promise that I’ll help you.”
May’s eyes searched Lynn’s soft ones and nodded while the tears came spilling out. She sobbed whole heartily and collapsed in Lynn’s waiting arms. Lynn petted May’s hair and wondered how long it’s been since May has been able to let her feelings go. And with a final sigh, Lynn gazed forward and knew this would be one hell of a journey.
