i just got back from the revolution hill ride. i was nervous before i went that i'd be the only girl and/or the slowest rider and everyone would be a dick. i was definitely the slowest rider, but the other 5 riders were really friendly and didn't mind pulling up at stop signs to wait on me every now and then. i wasn't THAT much slower anyway. and considering that the other 5 riders were 4 bike shop employees and a triathlete, i think i did pretty well for myself.
jess (the other woman on the ride) said that new riders only take about 3-4 weeks to come up to the fitness level where they can keep up with the bike shop employees. so that was encouraging. i was going to come back anyway but if the improvement is really that fast, all the more reason to become a regular.
man why the f haven't i been doing hill training this whole time instead of just long slow flat rides?
another benefit to doing weekday group rides is that they force me to leave the office between 5 and 6. otherwise, i would definitely stay later, and then i get home and realize that it's really late and i have all of 3 hrs to do all the other non-work shit i need to do before i go back to the office in the morning. i really like my job and its often hard to tear myself away from building awesome models and learning about radar physics. so, that's great, and it's a nice change from cap one. but i think i need to be careful to keep myself from going to the other extreme and becoming a workaholic.
i met the chief econometrician of the IRS on metro last night. I WANT HIS JOB! ...not enough to struggle through years of abstract math and graduate school of course. but it was still so cool to talk to him. it's pretty unusual to meet other people who can speak that language so fluently. i've forgotten a lot, but my god i can still hold my own.
i'm sure we entertained the crowded train with our talk of BLUE derivation and maximum likelihood. haha. DC is probably the only city in the world where that happens.
