Michaud had known something was wrong as midnight struck. Shelly had been late for work before, but when Chick had begun her routine and Shelly’s purple streak couldn’t be seen among the heads on the floor, he’d known. He hadn’t even bothered knocking on the door to her apartment before pushing open the door to find the house strangely neat and organised, for Shelly at least. And when he’d seen the half empty bottle of vodka, indiscriminate white powder on glad-wrap and the positive pregnancy test beside her prone body, all he could do was call Ellis and light a smoke.

Getting her body out of the apartment had been less difficult than he’d expected, leaning on Ellis in more ways than he’d care to admit. The car drive to the river was silent, punctuated only by Michaud giving directions and playing with his lighter while drawing his cigarettes down to the bitter end, just like he’d done in high school, desperate to get everything the little stick could give him. When they rolled her body into the river it’s what she’d want, no trouble, no fuss Ellis looked at him like he was expected to say something. Michaud shook his head and the only goodbye was the silent one inside his head.
