Sometimes. :D I don't know, I guess I'm just bitter and my first reaction is 'when we need a meme to inspire random acts of kindness, something's wrong'.
That's another thing I didn't touch on. How many people are going to be comfortable responding to that? I know I wouldn't feel comfortable.
Yeah, I know all but one of my four gift recipients in person, and the fourth one is someone I trust a lot. Personally, I'd be fine sending anyone on my list a present, but that's just me. I don't think most other people would be as willing to share their address.
I guess I didn't think of it as a random act of kindness, either. It's an excuse to use up some of my yarn/bead stash and get stuff in return.
Oh, I agree. I was sort of uncomfortable with it, too. When I want to give someone a gift, I do (unless I'm too poor on cash or time, then I wait until I have the moneys/finish the gift I'm working on).
I'm very glad I'm not alone here! I just think it actually means something when it's random and someone just acting to make someone smile. You know? Rather than posting a meme that's so much like those 'HAY GUYZ I'VE GOT STUFF TO GIVE AWAY, FREE TO FIRST COMMENTORS!' posts. Which I actually prefer, since they're more honest in my opinion.

Also, it took a couple of days for me to even get 4 people, which is what I predicted would happen. I see your point, though.
