hoping the old saying is true

I sure as hell hope the old saying is right that if your dress rehearsal sucks, you'll have a great opening night. Because tonight at dress rehearsal you'd have thought I never picked up a guitar before, let alone practiced for six weeks, including for about an hour before we started.

It was my understanding that I'd develop a muscle memory of my four songs -- an ability to automatically and effortlessly re-create the chord patterns each night, my fingers doing their own thing on the strings while I was busy singing. Apparently my brain didn't get the message.

I've never been a natural instrumentalist, so I didn't expect to be doing Eddie Van Halen imitations on stage. But I did expect to be able to get through four relatively easy songs in a satisfactory and reliable manner. Sure, I can fake my way through when I screw up, but anyone who's ever touched a guitar will know that it's terrible, and people who've never touched a guitar will hear that something's not right. Yes, it's a comedy, and my character may be an ex-con piece of poor white trash, but god damn it, I still want her music to be good.

It is incredibly frustrating.
