at 2am, she finds him outside her home
reeking of substance and alcohol
his forehead against her apartment door, leaning
steeped in sweat, eyes unfocused
traces of his night, one much like the one before it
and the one before that
those nights that steal him away
thieve her of his goodness
and return to her this
a counterfeit of the boy she loved
he envelops her in an embrace
buries his head into the crook of her neck
whispers a string of i love you i love you i love you i -
eyes darkening while his fingers ghost her skin
to him, she’s intoxicating
far better than any purchased high
he breathes her in,
enticing, addicting, all his
and he can’t help himself
he kisses her then
against her apartment door
hungry, needy, desperate
he clings to her, clings to them
but she doesn’t kiss back
and he comes down from his high
he pulls away, his heart paper-thin
a kindling of anger flickers within him
for her eyes were so sad
he wants to set ablaze to whoever hurt her
he searches her face for an answer
her eyes hold an apology, they blink back tears
and he realises that it’s him
it’s him that’s burning her blue
he turns to ash
she cups his face in one hand
tucks away a strand of loose hair with the other
i love you
he aches
but i don’t like you anymore
he’s shaking, while her face is wet with tears
he wants her to release a torrent of screams at him, insult him
punch him in the stomach, slap him in the face
it would hurt less, less than this
when she looks up at him for the last time
her eyes linger on his mouth
she gives him a chaste kiss
on the corner of his lips
goodbye
her voice cracks on the last syllable
and like another thief of the night
she slips away
taking his heart (bruised, battered, broken)
taking his love (her her her, only her)
away from him
he needs another drink
