[canon] Don't fuck with Marianne's children

Jan 09, 2008 19:04

Seriously, Marianne kicks so much ass that I felt this had to be included with my canon logging. I go by Celiss' take that if the novel parts don't directly contradict canon, I am willing to accept them as canon. It's up to interpretation either way, and this is too awesome to pass up.

Credit goes to Koshimizu from AnimeSuki forum. I took some liberties with transcribing it for my own logging.

Nunnally: Look, oniisama! Co-nesama gave me this.

Lelouch: Ah. It's pretty. Nunnally.

[Nunnally is holding a princess doll.]

Lelouch: I've seen a similar one in Euphie's room.

Nunnally: Fufu~ That's why I asked for one to go with hers. Since we are such good friends.

Lelouch: Then we must show this to Euphie.

Nunnally: Yep.

[Enter Gabriella & company.]

Gabriella: What's this?

[The lady wears heavy makeup. She looks straight forward with her narrow eyes and doesn't care to give Lelouch a look. Intentionally, of course.]

Gabriella: Don't you think there's a smell of stinking machine oil somewhere?

[Nunnally is frightened. Lelouch takes one step forward.]

Lelouch: I bid you a fine evening. Empress Gabriella.

[Gabriella ignores Lelouch.]

Gabriella: Or is it the smell of blood?

[Nunnally hides behind Lelouch.]

Lelouch: How may I help you?

[Lelouch's hostility begins to rise.]

Gabriella: Well, what do you know! Isn't this His Highness, the 11th Prince, who's rumored to be clever and kind, although being the precious son of the blood-stained empress.
Such unpleasant attitude. I guess I can't expect more from that woman's son. Now...

[Her arm suddenly reaches over Lelouch's head. However, her target is not Lelouch. It's Nunnally. Her crooked hand quickly grasps the doll that the princess was holding in the chest.]

Nunnally: Give that back!

Gabriella: Well, a doll? That's not needed. To think that woman's child is playing with a doll! Don't you think a corpse would suit her better?

[Laughter comes from the maidens behind her.]

Maiden 1: Madam Gabriella. Maybe that doll is a mimic of a corpse.

Maiden 2: It might be one she killed on battlefield.

Maiden 3: Oh dear, so very scary. However, it suits her status.

Maiden 4: Hahaha. So true.

Gabriella: Now, now. We can't call such a beautiful doll a corpse! At least not until it loses an arm or two!

[Her hands grip firmly at the arm of the doll, and twist it fiercely. Nunnally's eyes widened, and are filled with tears.]

Nunnally: No! Don't!

Lelouch: You... Stop right now! Who do you think it's from...

[A sudden gale sweeps over all of them. Gabriella staggers and drops the doll on the floor.]

Marianne: Yo hoo! Lelouch, Nunnally, I'm home!

Nunnally: Mother!

Marianne: I'm sorry. Did I keep you waiting?

Gabriella: Ma... Marianne! Such indignity of you to drive that thing into the palace!

[She gets a muzzle in response. With a mechanical sound, Ganymede raises its arm, pointing its rifle at the lady.]

Marianne: Whoa, my apologies. Since it's a experimental module, mis-operation happens once in a while.

[Marianne is smiling like an angel in Ganymede's cockpit.]

Marianne: Oh dear, no one can be sure accidents don't happen. Isn't it better to quickly hide yourself in the interior of the palace? Right? Your Graceful Highness Gabriella?

[Ganymede waves it rifle. The lady's face turns pale.]

Gabriella: You... you barbarian! I'll get even for this!

Also some interesting perspectives on the Geass boy's relationship from the creators and seiyuu.

This comes from Celiss at GameFaqs.

Another possible interpretation is that their friendship ended 7 years ago, and whatever it is between them from episode 1 onwards is only a desperate imitation of it. Sakurai mentions in the Asuka Sakurai + Fu-kuyama interview that the both of them have never taken a good look at what each other are like now; instead, they continue to want to believe that nothing has changed. In episode 6, Suzaku and Lelouch lightheartedly note the changes in each other, but in The Final Invitation this suddenly turns into bitter, frustrated accusations; towards the end the atmosphere reads something like: "You've changed. You weren't like this before. Why couldn't you have stayed the same?"

In the same interview, Fu-kuyama also talks about his personal, somewhat bizarre take on Lelouch's mentality: The way Lelouch treats Suzaku is similar to how someone would treat an ex-girlfriend (No, this is not supposed to be yaoi-bait; squeal / scream / slit your wrist away, though, if you want to) In his opinion, it's something like, "I know you've gone through some things after our separation, but... I really don't want to know what they are. I don't have the courage to ask." This is also reflected in the Stage 2 novel, in which, after Lelouch makes Mao shut up, Lelouch thinks to himself that, even though it was mainly for Suzaku's sake, in truth a part of him did it because he was too afraid to hear the rest. He had the unshakable feeling that if Mao had gone on, Suzaku would leave them (LuluNana) forever. Lelouch then wonders whether he did the right thing -- the parts that hadn't been revealed, will lie buried in the dark recesses of time, never to be spoken of again...
