You are my Sun

Chapter 8. Strange revelations

I don’t know how long I’ll live, but as long as I do, I have to learn the feeling of being hugged by the person to whom I left my soul behind.” (Magda Szabó)

Linda’s birthday party had clearly been a roaring success; everyone at school was talking about how great it was. If possible, it brought the birthday girl and Chris closer however Matt and Dom were kind of regretting their participation at it. No, they didn’t exactly regret it but it confused them beyond belief; the contrasting feelings dominating their minds.

Matthew was now fully aware of his ever growing affection for his friend and decided that it would be useless to fight against it; he had no intention in revealing his feelings though, which were not exactly what you would call normal. I resisted three months without saying a word; I’ll just stash my sentiments in the most secure place, in my heart, and nobody will ever find out about them. He even hoped that it was just a crazy obsession which would pass after a short time, but this seemed improbable since day after day he discovered new qualities in his friend which solidified his fascination for him.

On the other hand, everything was new to Dom and rather frightening. He prohibited his mind from wandering to the unexpected event of the party, especially to the pleasant warmness that made his body tingle whenever he remembered it. His ears burnt just at the thought that he had enjoyed the kiss. Dom soon came up with the explanation that both Matt and him were drunk, which was obviously an exaggeration, and therefore didn’t know what they were doing. Maybe he didn’t trust himself because he also decided to make it up with Annette and spend more time with her. After all, she was kind of his girlfriend, even though this thought didn’t make him as enthusiastic as he considered he should have been.

The following Monday, Dominic waited for Annette in front of the school with a red rose and she forgave him on the spot. They were heavily making out when Matthew passed besides them with a hurt expression written on his face; the annoying images convincing him even more that his love was unrequited, one-sided. No jealousy scenes, Bellamy, you have no right to feel that!

In the classroom, Matt held himself together with enough composure that Dom’s initial fears of feeling awkward in his friend’s presence were soon dispelled. They carefully avoided conversations regarding the party and even though the atmosphere was tenser than usually, they found it easier to deal with it than they would have thought.

Dom’s mind kept wandering off to certain details though; remembering how soft Matt’s lips felt but he then forgot to avert his eyes from the small mouth of his friend.

“What are you staring at?” Matt asked confusedly, raising his left eyebrow.

“Nothing… just zoned out. Sorry.” Dom lied and turned to face the teacher, promising himself that he would brace up and not allow such thoughts to plague his mind. He decided that he could easily avoid this by spending more time with Annette, even though that meant long and boring hours of shopping and futile conversations.

The chilly days of November passed quickly for the youngsters in Teignmouth. Days grew shorter and the darkness deeply affected the hearts that didn’t have at least a small glimmer of happiness in them. For Dominic, his heart only pumped with joy when he was around his friends because, for an unknown reason, the atmosphere at home was best described as misery and gloominess. Something was going on between his parents, although they didn’t want to share their problems with him. Moreover, they said that they didn’t have any issues, but Dom noticed the obvious distancing within their relationship. The blonde boy appealed mostly to his sister for assistance who was trying to reassure Dominic but she sensed as well that the situation might have been more serious than it appeared.

One evening, when Dom was returning from the library, he found his mother in the kitchen whistling a cheerful and catchy tune whilst preparing dinner. This brought a smile on his face, although he wondered if there was any special reason behind his Mum’s painstaking arrangements: a fragrant bouquet of flowers and two candles were decorating the table and she had also baked a chocolate cake.

Dominic decided to slip unawares into his room and spend the evening lazing about. He was watching a thriller on television when he heard his father’s footsteps and grumpy voice. ‘He’ll soon be zinged up when he notices Mum’s surprise!’ Dom smiled, arranging the pillow behind his head. Unfortunately, his smile faded away shortly after he heard the muffled quarrel of his parents.

“What’s all these crap?” His father asked with profound disgust in his voice.

There was a moment of deafening silence before his Mum cried out in response.

“So, William, you don’t know what day is today?”

Dominic’s muscles clenched with foreboding and he lowered the volume of the TV. His mother continued her painful reproach.

“It’s our anniversary. How could you forget it?! We married twenty-four years ago but it seems that our marriage doesn’t matter to you at all! Tell me, were all these years a mistake?!”

“Lilly, I…”

Dominic never heard his father’s voice so weak and guilty. He didn’t want to be witness to this fight anymore; the angry voices pierced his heart, paining with each hurtful syllable. The shuddering boy put a pillow over his head but it didn’t help.

“I’ve been trying to save our marriage for quite some time but you don’t want to put any effort in it. I gave you my best and you? You have given me nothing… I can’t take anymore of your apathy and cold attitude, William! If you haven’t noticed yet, I am a human being with emotions and needs, like love…” At this point Mrs. Howard’s faux sturdiness collapsed and she couldn’t hold her tears back anymore.

“Just shut the fuck up, woman! Don’t you dare put the blame entirely on me because that’s not true! I’m working hard for money every day to offer my family the best, the comfort you’re used to… but I see that it is in vain. I won’t stay any longer in this shithole!”

Dominic’s fists clenched with anger when his father replied so harshly. Mr. Howard hated seeing people cry because he couldn’t; he also believed that it was a childish form of manipulating people. The blonde boy learned from a very early age that tears in front of his father only meant more tears when he was alone; in the sense that he either was slapped across the face or he was punished by his severe paren. All this just led to more pain to weep about when he was locked in his room.

“So what? You’re just going to walk away?! Bastard!” Lilly shrieked; in the next moment, Dom was frightened by the sound of something crashing against a wall. It was probably a plate which shattered together with the boy’s fragile heart.

“I- I’m s-sorry,” Lilly stuttered, “Will, I didn’t mean…”

“You crazy bitch! I’m out of here, I don’t want to live with a psycho!” He spat the words with such rage and venom and the forcefully slammed door signaled his exit.

“Maybe he won’t ever come back.” Dom’s first thought as heard the sound and a sense of panic washed over him. Even though he was shaking all over, he knew he couldn’t leave his mother alone; he stumbled out of his room just in time to see Mrs. Howard locking herself in the bedroom. A later look in the kitchen was enough to see the chaos: shards of the vase lay strewn across the floor with the poor flowers wilting slowly, much like the boy’s zest. The two candles were still flickering on the table, so Dom blew them out; there was no need for them. No celebration for tonight…

The boy stood awkwardly in front of his mother’s bedroom door and his heart sank when he heard the muffled sobs from within. He finally knocked on the door, a worried quiver in his voice.

“Mum? Are you okay?”

“Just… leave me… alone… Dom,” was all his mother could manage to say between her heart-breaking sobs.

Dominic knew that his mother was right, it would take time to process the dramatic events of the evening but he still felt so useless; it also hit him that he needed some comfort too. His first thought was to call Athena, his sister, however he remembered that she was probably celebrating one of her friends’ birthday, so he didn’t want to ruin her day too.

Dom always associated comfort with women because they weren’t ashamed to show their empathy and to soothe his pain with kind words. He was sure that he would derive solace from Annette, so he decided to call her despite the late hour.

“Sverige residence.” A woman, most probably a maid, answered the phone.

“Good evening! Dominic Howard speaking. I’d like to talk with Miss Annette, please.”

“Just a moment, Sir.”

The boy was fiddling with the telephone cord while the call was switched to his girlfriend’s room.

“Hello?” Annette answered whilst stifling a yawn.

“Hey baby, how are you?”

“Quite sleepy ‘cause you woke me up,” Annette complained briefly before she changed the subject, “Have you asked your parents about your birthday party? I think we should organise it in a club or some other fancy place. I want to invite my friends from London and…”

“Annette, wait…” Dom tried to interrupt the girl’s waffle and furrowed his brows.

“Oh, we should also look for a DJ, I mean you don’t want to listen to crap music, right? So Jennifer told me she saw an advertisement about this guy from Plymouth. He even won some award, I think he’d be great and…”

“No, Annette, let me say something…” Dom was starting to boil over with rage.

“I know, I know that I’m too excited about this and you haven’t even asked your parents but it would be extremely cool to have this party, I really want to wear that pink dress, you know, the one I bought when we went to…”

“ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?!” Dom shouted, finally succeeding in putting his girlfriend to silence. “Good. I wanted to ask your help in something but you care about is yourself. I kind of always knew it; I just didn’t want to admit it.”

“Dominic, sweets, don’t…”

“No, listen to me! I asked for your help only once and you’ve just ignored me. Annette, I don’t think we are made to be together…” Dominic spoke politely.

“Are you saying that you want us to break up?!” She squealed angrily, “Fuck you, actually I’m dumping you!”

“FINE! Should have done it some weeks ago!”

“Screw you, I’ll tell everyone in school what a dickhead you are and that you’re a bad kisser and…”

“Sure, just don’t forget to add what a bitch you are! Bye!” With that Dom slammed down the telephone. Instead of sadness though, he felt relief.

“One less trouble on my head.” Dominic muttered as he headed to the hallway and put on his coat. He knew exactly who to go to, in fact, he knew that from the first moment but shyness had stopped him. However, nothing could change his determined mind now, not even the cold winds howling furiously.

Matt was reading in his room. He tightened the warm blanket which enveloped his body and looked up at the bare branches which were blown about by the winter wind. His daydream was put to an end when he heard the doorbell. Knowing that his grandmother went to help Linda and her mother in cooking that night, he hurried downstairs as fast as he could.

He was definitely very surprised to see Dominic and he smiled widely. However, when he met his friend’s eyes, he knew that something was wrong.

“Dom! Come in…” He closed the door behind his friend, who was shivering fiercely. Matt remembered the blanket around his shoulders which he then took it off, motherly wrapping it around Dominic who smiled sheepishly at the endearing affection.

“There, there, Dommy, you’ll soon be warm!” Matthew said smiling.

The blonde boy blushed at the cute nickname but he couldn’t stop the choked cry which escaped from his lungs, tears flowing down his cheeks. Matt’s kindness was too much and he couldn’t hold back his sadness anymore. His friend whispered soothing words while he led Dom to the couch in the living room. He hugged Matt tightly and hid his face in Matt’s chest. The black-haired boy was surprised but it was a very pleasant feeling to have Dominic so close; he stroked his friend’s back wishing he could erase his pain.

After a few minutes, Dom started confessing the cause of his misery. When Matt heard about the argument, his arms tightened around his friend. It reminded him so much about his parents’ case and he wished upon nobody the grief he’d also been left with in his heart.

“I’m sorry, Matt, I really don’t have the right to complain about this to you,” Dom blushed, finally looking up to meet blue eyes looking kindly at him.

“No, it’s all right. I just hope your parents will make up before jumping into something that serious.

They both sat in silence until Dominic added:

“I broke up with Annette too.”

Though Matt’s heart pumped with joy, he expressed his regrets which prompted Dom to shake his head in response.

“It was a wise decision, Matt, you shouldn’t be sorry. She’s a selfish, cruel, arrogant bitch and I don’t need any of that because I have the best friends in the world.” His statement was followed by a grateful smile which made Matt’s cheeks to flush. The blonde boy seized back his spot on Matt’s chest as they both enjoyed the warm contentment they felt in their earlier closeness.

Dominic felt that he would soon fall asleep, so after a while he got up and told Matt that it was late and he had to go. Before leaving, he turned back to his friend with a smile.

“Matt…”

Dominic hurried to his friend and hugged him for the last time, thanking his help over and over again. Matt was drunk with joy and he took advantage of the situation, squeezing his friend to prove his immense love for him. Dominic didn’t mind it in the least; he needed every bit of affection to survive the night.
