There was a Christmas tree outside the Watchtower.
Christmas usually reminded him just how alone he felt, he saw the families decorating their houses together, piling presents under the tree, preparing their Christmas meals and it was hard to ignore how much he missed being around his friends and family.
For two whole years, even if he had his moments, he had managed to ignore how lonely he was, but since he found out about Chloe and Oliver's marriage, it had become harder and harder. Since then, he had the feeling he was the only one who was alone.
He was happy for them, he sincerely was, but he couldn't ignore the jealousy he felt and how he wished he too had found someone, someone who knew everything about him, all of his secrets and who accepted him the way he was.
That would never happen, he was aware of it, which was why the best thing he could do was do all he could to embrace his destiny, his kryptonian self, and do the one thing he could do for humans: Keep them safe.
But seeing that Christmas tree outside of the Watchtower, tied to the top of Oliver's car made it harder. He knew Bart, AC and Victor were staying there with them too and he had no doubt they would be all spending Christmas together, celebrating.
Like a family. Another family he wasn't a part of.
Just a couple of weeks ago Oliver had come let him know that Lex was alive. And then Oliver had come back a few minutes to tell him Chloe had been worried he would go after Lex himself and get hurt and to warn him to be careful.
That had made him realize that no matter how much he tried to distance himself from them, the people he knew still cared about him and made him want to go back to what he used to be even more.
He was tired of being lonely, tired of being alone.
But that was how it had to be. On Christmas, Chloe, Oliver, Bart, AC and Victor would be celebrating together and he would probably be on the next rooftop. Watching them.
At least his friends were happy.
