I am finding that the more and more I ready myself for making 2008 my "Year without Superhero Comics!" the harder it is going to be to cope with comic fandom in general.
Where will I get my news on upcoming non-superhero comics? Good luck with Newsarama, that place is a good 90% spandex. Sure they toss a bone to IDW , Devi's Due, Virgin, and the odd non super Image book. But the majority of that site is hype for the next mega huge inter crossover event driven crap. So it looks like me and
¡Journalista! And since one of the main points of this experiments is to avoid the negativity and snark of fandom arguments, this means I will have to forgo other regular stops on my internet voyages. So no
When Fangirls Attack! or even
scans_daily, because they just lead to the temptation of talking and reading about the various superhero multiversi.
Even while imagining the dread of staring into the abyss. I am overall still pretty upbeat about this project of mine. Just the ability to free myself from the addiction seems worth it. The chance to purposely avoid conversations like "Magneto is being written so out of character. Everyone knows he should always be written like the one version that this writer did that one time, despite the fact that he has been written with multiple characterizations over the last 45 years!" or "I hate the 14th revamp of Legion of Superheroes because I loved them as a child and have never stopped reading them no matter how unpleasant and unsatisfying the title becomes!" It makes you wonder sometimes what they might be slipping in the ink to keep people so hooked, even when they seem so unhappy?
If anyone wants to break the cycle with me, feel free. You could just do one title, instead of the whole genre. Pick one title that has made you more upset than satisfied. Is there a book you never ever stopped reading, but you don't know any good reason why you have not? Perhaps 2008 is the time for you to break your cycle. Find something else that might make you a happy reader.
Coming 01-01-2008!
