A developing thought process. The beginning of the next great comics experiment?

Oct 11, 2007 08:55

I typed a bunch of long winded shit.

Then I deleted it.

Basically, I am thinking about setting myself up for something akin to what they call on those reality shows as "a great social experiment". Which is to say, it has no scientific or true experimental value. It is meerly just to see what happens if we do X, Y, and Z.

So over the next two months I am going to start dropping a number of regular comics I get. All superhero genre books. The capes and spandex stuff. The genre that seems to make it's fans the most frustrated. I figure that if I took out all the negativity that this fan-dumb seems to cause, I might in turn become a happier person? If not, then anyone reading this will be able to enjoy the record of my decent into nerd madness.

Here are the rules that I have defined for the "no capes and spandex" experiment.

1. It starts on January 1st. This gives me two months leeway to get my affairs in order at my local comic shop. If he keeps ordering an extra copy of this or that, it will be his own fault.

2. No superhero comics. It doesn't matter that they are written by my favorite writers (Sorry Mister Morrison and Mister Ellis). If it features a storyline of costumed and super powered individuals having adventures, then I will have to pass until at least January 1, 2009.

3. I will allow myself to read two parody comics about superheroes, so long as they do not actually portray superheroes in overwhelming positive light. This little backdoor is just so I can still read 'The Boys" and any issues of "Superf*ckers" that come out next year. The way I figure it, both of these titles are essentially anti-super, so they do not violate my experiment.

4. Borderline fantasy/ sci fi/ adventure comics that rely to heavily on the conventions of superheroes, will also be banned as potential reading material. This will keep me from reading say, Zatanna, which is technically about magical fantasy. If they wear a costume and hang out with super freakos, they are super freakos too.

5. Have fun and enjoy myself.

6. Try new comics that still qualify as readable during my experiment.

7. Due to the fact that I still sometimes buy and sell old comics. I must be able to buy back issue comics of general value and age. Even then, I can only look at the book for value and condition purposes, not for reading or personal use.

8. I must use my blog to document how the experiment is going.

It will be a year without Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
A year without Wars and Crisis'.
No More Tights! No Capes! No Masks!

but not a year without good comics? The unprecedented, critically acclaimed weekly series of death, danger, romance, terror and the never-ending search to avoid heroism!

COMING JANUARY 1st, 2008!

the year without superheroes, preview, experiment, rules, no superheroes, fun, fuck comics, one year
