Mom’s eyeballs were shaped like they could never use a blink, so having them stare at you for an incredibly long period of time made you jumpy even while watching a particularly joyful theme song of Teletubbies. After a period of time, I finally broke down. “Mom, what is it?” Blinking back to reality, Mom said “Honey, your father and I discussed this, and we think it’s better if you join a ballet class.” I rolled my eyes and glanced at Mom. There was every hint of seriousness behind those two unmoving eyes. Until then, I led a perfectly carefree life watching Teletubbies and Barney. When the clock struck 6, I would be in the playground in the nick of time hanging on the monkey bars till blisters popped out. Everyday, I was busy. Busy doing nothing. Before, I knew Mom as this indecisive woman who sprung beside Dad whenever he blew his whistle, but now, I wasn’t so sure.
“You know that’s not happening, right?” I asked gingerly, just to make sure. “I don’t like to dance, and I’ve seen ballerinas. Their toes are flat as pancakes from all those spinning, and their costume’s just, weird. I’m pretty sure if I’m gonna be one, I’ll have all sorts of leg diseases and a toe transplant or whatever when I’m old. Ballet is for girly people, definitely not for me.” At this point, I was pretty sure I had my dear old Mommy convinced.
“Honey, I know that you’re really happy right now. But your father and I want you to be flexible and sporty when you grow up. You know how it is in this family, sports isn’t our thing to brag about at dinner parties.” Mom heaved a sigh. “And, now the good schools are so demanding. It’s not enough if you know the whole encyclopedia, now, schools are looking for special talents. If they know that you’ve started training ballet since you were 5 years old, that will keep you up in the running. Best of all, we’ll have a showcase item at dinner parties.” I had to admit Mom made a good point. Still, I wasn’t satisfied. There was a sentence which held the key. “Why can’t you showcase sis?”
“Because she’s not as good as you are, honey!” Mom knew exactly what I wanted to hear. I giggled and blushed. After all these years, Mom finally learnt the ropes.
