April concerts and such

May 25, 2009 20:09

Well at least I'm only a month behind now.
And considering the fact that most people have abandoned this site for Facebook and Twitter, it's not like there's a whole bunch of folks clamoring to read this dribble anyways.  For the remaining three or four of you...enjoy.

Chris Cornell - 4/1 @ Center Stage

I go to a lot of concerts, granted not as many as I used to, but still plenty overall.  And over the years, I've never been able to determine why it takes some people so long to get their ass on stage.  Case in point...Chris Cornell.  There was maybe an hour or more between the opening act and Chris.  The last time I recall having to wait that long was for Deathklok, and they're freakin' cartoons!  Also, the place was hot and humid as hell, and there was a weird smell in the room.  It got so bad, one chick passed out and had to be taken away.  I couldn't stay in the main room too long myself either, it was pretty uncomfortable.  As far as the show itself, once it finally started, it was alright.  Chris looked a bit strung out, but he still sounded great.  And it was good to hear all those old Soundgarden songs, even if it meant having to hear his new material too.

Lady GaGa & Chester French - 4/6 @ House Of Blues (Orlando, FL)

Let's get this straight, I don't like her music and she seems like a total bitch.  But I do appreciate her artist vision she was conveying at her show.  She's kind of a like a tiny, blonde, white Grace Jones, except with crappier music.  Chester French was fun and actually played music I enjoyed.

Lady GaGa & Chester French - 4/7@ The Ritz (Tampa, FL)

Pretty much the same show as the night before.  Almost like clockwork.

Lady GaGa & Chester French - 4/9 @ Center Stage

After three nights of seeing the EXACT same show, the appreciation for artistic vision has pretty much run it's course.  I hope to never have to see her disco stick ass again.

Lily Allen - 4/15 @ Variety Playhouse

The choices this evening were Katy Perry or Lily Allen.  Katy Perry is someone who I just want to see naked, so I had no interest in her show.  Whereas Lily Allen is someone who I want to see naked, but I actually enjoy her music.  So the choice was easy.  Her stage set up looked like something you'd see off a 60's variety show, like say Shindig.  I was expecting her to be a lot snottier in person, but she was pretty chill and laid back.  Apparently when I was in the lobby talking to Norman and Matt, I missed her flashing the audience.  Dang.

Record Store Day - 4/18 @ Criminal Records

Second annual Record Store Day, woo hoo!  How did you celebrate?  I stopped by Criminal Records and the place was PACKED.  There was some band on stage playing, but I don't remember whom.  And as they almost a dozen playing, there's no way of telling either.  But it was cool to go into a record store and see a crowd of people shopping around.  You just can't download that kind of experience.

Atlanta Rollergirls Bout - 4/18 @ Yaarab Shrine Center

This month's roller derby action featured big wins by the Dirty South Derby Girls (Atlanta's all-star team) and the Toxic Shocks for each of the two bouts.  Again, you only have three more double header bouts remaining if you want to check them out this season.

The Room - 4/21 @ Plaza Theatre

OH MY GOD.  What can I say?  I've heard about this movie, I've heard all the hype about this movie, but nothing really prepares you for this movie.  This is without a doubt the best worst movie ever made.  If MST3K was still around, they could do an entire season JUST on The Room.  There's no point describing the plot, because it doesn't matter.  You just need to see this and see it with an audience.  It's stunning and hilarious and horrible all at the same time.  Appears this will be a monthly showing at the Plaza and I think I'm going to try to go every time.

George Clinton - 4/26 @ Variety Playhouse

The concert started at 7:30, but I didn't show up until around 10PM and that's about when they finally got warmed up.  Concert timing!  There was more people onstage then I've about ever seen, they make a salsa band look like a quartet.  George's voice is almost gone, but he can still bring the funk.  And the guy in diapers is so old looking now, that he probably needs them at this point.  Musically they were tight, but not as uptempo as you would expect.  My only complaint was that there were way too many hippies at the show than necessary, not that any hippies are necessary, but you get the idea.  Damn you Bonnaroo!!!  However, there was this one dude that was so happy and excited to hear "Flashlight" that he kept yelling out the chorus before they started the first stanza.  The guy was in pure ecstasy and kept yelling out things like "bring down the house!"  I just looked at him in amazement and wish I got that excited about anything.  I was kind of jealous really.

James Morrison - 4/27 @ The Loft

If you like that English blue-eyed soul, singer/songwriter stuff, than James Morrison should be up your alley.  I like his voice and his songs are pretty catchy.  Honestly, I can't seem to figure out why he's not as well known as he should be.  Oh wait, no one seems to give a crap about singer/songwriter guys anymore.  How could I forget?
