Well I've apparently made it through yet another round of company wide layoffs.
And as relieved as I am that I still have a job, I'm just wondering how long I'm going to be able to keep escaping what seems inevitable. From what I heard, one of our departments lost anywhere from 60 - 100 people today and I didn't even think they had that much staff to begin with, so realistically, it's seems only a matter of time. Because over my 15 years career, I've been through so many mergers, restructurings, layoffs, downsizings, etc that I can't even count anymore. But I do know that they seem to happen more and more frequently as the years go by. It's starting to feel like I'm living in the world of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," eventually my number is going to come up.
Trust me, I know it's bad out there everywhere. That's one of the reasons that I took on a second p/t weekend job. Just to have some extra cushion and try to pay down some debt, so that can keep my head above water. And if I do let go, at least I have that job as a backup. Granted, it's not the full time job I would want, but these days you take what you can get.
Personally, I'd prefer to find one good stable job that pays enough that I can ditch the sinking ship and the gig that's taking away my weekends. But I'm going to say that I'm cynical enough to know that the likelihood of that is probably along the lines of a black man becoming Presid...wait a minute....
Fingers crossed 2009 WILL be a year of change.
