Package Deal
"Veneziano isn't here," Romano began and Germany was left thoroughly perplexed. He waited till after the Italian served him iced coffee and a cream cheese-and-fruit tart to figure out for the life of him what was going on.
He settled on the possibility that it was all a huge prank. "So...you're the one who called me over?"
"Yes," Romano said solidly, blushing right to his ears and it was a most interesting reaction. "And I want to talk to you."
Then why couldn't he have said so in the first place? Germany thought but kept quiet for the meantime. He had an inkling of what Romano wanted to talk about but wasn't expecting him to be the overprotective brother type. After all, he and Italy didn't exactly act like siblings.
"It's about my brother."
Bingo.
"I've been told you two are going out."
Germany felt his face heat up. Phrasing it that way made it sound all funny and awkward-like but he wasn't going to deny it. He and Italy did share something intimate, and being seemingly scrutinized by Romano felt like he was going to be tried too see if he was suitable to be going out with the boy.
"W-we haven't done anything--" Germany began and Romano twitched like he wanted to say 'and what exactly is anything?!' but instead gave him a withering look that clearly spelled 'you are hopeless'.
Germany was promptly taken aback.
"That's good then," Romano said tersely. "Because it's annoying."
"...excuse me?"
"You think you're so cool, dating Italy when you don't know there's two to the country. Can't you still take a hint when there's already a moustache in front of your face?"
And in those moments of Romano's tirade did Germany notice, quite absurdly in the fact he did, how endearing the Italian looked when he was popping a vein. With trained eye and patience he only had with Italy did he realize the southern half wasn't very different from the northern one. He found it cute.
The thought then intrigued him more than surprised or disgusted him. Perhaps it was the tiredness after a long day of work and putting up with Prussia's antics, of thinking Italy had called him for another useless thing or other, or embarrassing stuff like hugging and playing with his hands and listening to him chatter about pasta (which he all secretly enjoyed) that took its toll on him and he stood to grab Romano by the shoulders.
"Wh-what is it, you potato bastard?! Have you even been listening?"
A strangled cry (or was it a pleased mewl?) erupted from Romano when Germany all but kissed him.

"Heeh~ Roma didn't tell you why he wanted you out of the house?" Spain asked Veneziano as they shared a bottle of red wine and two plates of creamy penne.
"He didn't, but I already have an idea," the Italian replied, bringing a bite of pasta to his mouth and eating it with a happy hum. "After I called Germany's house and found out he came over for a visit."
"You're not angry?" Spain said.
"I've known for a while that brother liked Germany," Veneziano answered. "He only reacts to the people he feels strongly for, like you and him. The rest he's scared of or ignores, like England and brother France."
Spain took a sip of wine. "Well that's awfully nice of you, sharing with Romano."
"Ve~ I'm used to it. And I can say the same for you, brother Spain."
"I've always known Romano only saw me as a life long friend. Ah~ boss is sad now!"
They ate and talked into the evening and when the Spaniard asked Veneziano if he should be headed home, he answered, "I don't know if they're done yet, ve~ But I guess it's okay. What Germany doesn't know is that if you date one, you get the both of us as a package deal!"
