Souring, first Suze then The Simple Dollar

Jun 26, 2007 10:32

A while ago, in a show episode, Suze demanded that a single mother get rid of her dogs. They were costing her money she didn't have - get rid of them.

That was probably the first email I sent her stating my displeasure with her advice.

Now TSD has this post on pets. (At one point in another post he listed getting rid of pets as a way to trim the fat.)

What I particularly love is how he tries to argue that it is better to rehome them so they are not in a stressful money-pinching environment and not bring them to a shelter. Hello, have you done any rescue at all? Good luck finding such a home and good luck keeping ignorant that if you do so it will displace a shelter animal, who then dies.

There was also an episode of Clean House where they cajoled the family into getting rid of their fishtank (it was dirty but still) - however, I couldn't find any Clean House email to complain. I think I just sent the email to the station.

It just strikes me as not only inhumane but not psychologically best for most pet-owners. In times of foster networks partnering with domestic abuse shelters so moms/kids are willing to leave if their pet can be safe too...and the whole Katrina forced separation issue...not only in very bad taste to suggest but also psychologically damaging for the person who now thinks they are so destitute that they had to give up their pet.
