The Michigan House Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee has passed a budget plan to CUT $4 million in funding for Wayne State University, marking the fifth consecutive year of funding cuts for WSU supported by the House of Representatives. Further, this plan targets WSU as the ONLY four-year public university in Michigan to receive less state money this year than last.
The Senate and Governor Granholm recommend a two-percent INCREASE for WSU, and we respectfully ask the House of Representatives to fund WSU at least as well.
Michigan’s economy is in the midst of a historic transformation. WSU, along with Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, the state’s other two research universities with medical schools, must receive proper funding to provide high quality and affordable education today for the benefit of the state’s global competitiveness and economic future.
Technology and medicine are two areas in which the state excels. Our three universities play an important role in transferring technology from laboratories to the marketplace, creating jobs and sparking economic growth. Every day, Michigan could not open for business without Wayne State University. We deliver a continuous body of educated, responsible citizens who contribute directly to the state’s economic future.
I urge you to contact your legislator TODAY on behalf of Wayne State University by visiting www.wayne.edu/takeaction as the House of Representatives is expecting to vote on the Higher Education Budget on Tuesday, May 23. Providing Michigan’s higher education institutions with appropriate funding is of critical importance in creating a well-prepared workforce.
