for anybody to comprehend what is going on in this country of mine who is not german and who is not here at this particular moment is just IMPOSSIBLE! i think i might have told you how unconscious germans are concerning their culture. concerning being patriotic. germans are ususally not patriotic. for years and years they have told you "you cant be proud to be german!" because "being german" is associated with hitler, the nazis and the holocaust. something is happening in germany today. people start realizing that those associations have nothing to do with being german. it is part of our history, part of our culture. yes it is part of us. but still there are thousands of things we can be proud of. we have a great function democracy, we have an right now only "ok" economy. german products are well known as being reliable, being good and functional.
so during those days of the soccer world cup i have seen for the first time in my life people putting up germany flags out of their houses. you see germany flags everywhere. people sing the national anthem PROUD AND LOUD!!! surprising enough they know the words of their own anthem...;)
yesterday was the fourth final game Argentina vs Germany. argentina was favorite for the cup. the world thought argentina would kick those germans out of the race for the cup. they made their calculations without the 12th player (a soccer team consist out of 10 field players and one goalie). the 12th player is german. the fans. the support in the stadium. germany won the game. it was a mental break down. argentina started leading by one goal. at the public viewing where i was (12000 people just to see the game on a huge screen!!!) there was silent during the first goal of the argentians. i thought it would be over. about 60 minutes had been played. thirty more to go. and we made it. we shot one other goal...my stomach was all antsy. i was so fierce. i could not believe my eyes. people were screaming, people were laughing!!! it was a huge party. you just randomly hugged everybody. we danced and danced. 90 minutes were over and the score was still 1:1. elongation two times 15 more minutes. nothing happened. both teams played so well. devensive. and then penalty. and who can damn it beat the germans in penalty? NOBODY...we won...our super goalie just left one through and we hit all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it was very exciting. if he wasnt gonna let this one through we would be in the final. i was not able to breath! and he made it. jens lehmann our super goalie. OMG! we re in the semi finals. i cant believe it even tho it is a day later. it was crazy....i am stunned by what they have showed the world.
being in this semi final is such a dynamic impulse for our identity. GO GERMANY! i am proud to be german. one tuesday we gotta beat the italians. germany is in the final then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
