Chapter one
When we think about our lives, they seem mundane. We think that everybody else’s lives are better, more interesting. We yearn for something interesting to happen, for us to break free from the daily grind.
I used to hope that things would pick up for me. If I knew then what I know now, I would have never questioned my happiness. Change isn’t always for the best; we found this out the hard way.
I wish everything could go back to how it was. I never thought anything would end like it did. But this is our story; this is how our lives got changed.
~
The sky is a pastel blue, stretching far across the horizon. A gentle breeze rolls past us as we walk. A discarded drinks can trundles past and a dog barks somewhere off in the distance. I plunge my hands into my pockets and kick a stone onto the road.
“How far is it to your house again?” A voice comes from behind me.
“Not too far now.” A different voice comes from the same direction.
“Just as well,” The first voice moans. “My feet ache.”
“Oh stop moaning, Brendon!” I turn around and laugh at the guy who is trudging behind me. He shoots me a look as if to say you try walking in these shoes.
I turn around and kick another stone. The sky is turning darker and we up our pace.
“Ryan, you better have Doritos at your house.” The guy next to me, Jon, turns back to the couple.
“When do I not have Doritos?” He laughs and put his arm around Brendon. He rests his head on his shoulder and winces as he walks in his two-sizes-too-small shoes.
I take a deep breath and look at the floor as we walk. We don’t say anything for a while, but conversation sparks when we hear a noise.
“What was that?” I raise my head urgently like a meerkat.
“What was what?” Ryan looks away from the boy on his arm and checks out our surroundings.
“That sound. I heard it too. I think it came from over there.” Jon points to an alleyway.
“Uh, I’m not going over there. I don’t like alleys.” Brendon moans.
I take a few steps forward and turn around, gesturing for the others to follow me. Brendon crosses his arms and refuses to move, but Ryan and Jon follow. He lets out a frustrated-sounding sigh and stomps after us. We look around the corner of the alley and realise that nothing could have prepared us for what we see.
Around the corner, a figure is standing over a body. It bends down and plunges its hand at the body on the floor and there is a blood-curdling scream that becomes a cry and then a whimper before silence. We all try to be as silent as possible, despite the horrific scene before us. The figure rises and in their hand is a knife, the evening light reflects off of it, displaying its scarlet hue. There is a pool of blood on the floor around the figure and the motionless corpse. The figure turns around and glares straight at us.
My jaw drops open as the figure takes a step forward in out direction. The words “Oh god” Escape my lips and I step back, knocking into Jon. The man starts striding towards us and we are frozen in place. Suddenly, Brendon bends down and rips off his shoes. “Guys, run!” He yells and we all run in the direction of Ryan’s house.
We arrive at his house and run up the path to his front door. I feel a sweat breaking across me; my adrenaline is pumping as fast as my blood and I find myself breathing heavily.
“What the hell was that?” Jon cries out, catching his breath.
“That guy was dead. That guy on the floor was dead.” I tremble, clasping my hands over my face. I look up to see Ryan fumbling with his house keys and only just managing to get the key into the lock with his hands shaking so much. Brendon is sobbing behind me and I walk back down the path. At the end of the street, I see the man walking purposefully towards us.
“Ryan, get that damn door open!” I shout as I sprint back up the path.
There is a fumbling and we all spill through into the house, just as the man appears. We all drop to the floor behind the door and are silent other than our heavy breathing and the broken sobs from Brendon.
There is a pause full of complete silence, before there is a massive slam on the on door. “Jesus Christ!” I scream and we all crawl away from the door. There is nobody on the other side of the door, and I pull myself up onto my feet. The man must’ve left.
“I-I think h-he’s g-gone.” I stutter as I struggle to hold myself up.
“I hope we never have to go through anything like that ever again.” Jon whispers, holding his knees into him.
I look at Brendon. “Are you ok?” I ask him.
He squeezes his eyes shut and shakes his head. “He killed that p-person. Right in f-front of us. He killed them.” He whimpers. Ryan pulls him into his chest and strokes his hair off of his face.
This is when I wish things could have returned to normal, the point at which I wish we never looked in the alleyway.
This is the point of no return.
~
We scramble into the living room and put on the television, watching the evening news. “Notorious murderer Chuck Hurst is believed to have escaped from prison and is believed to be on the loose.”
My jaw drops open.
“If you see this man, alert the police as soon as possible.”
A police mug shot is displayed on screen and the room falls silent. “Spencer...” Jon’s shaky voice comes from behind me and I keep my eyes fixed on the television screen.
“A body has been found in a Suburban area, and Hurst is the suspected murderer. Police urge that we find this criminal. We must all remain vigilant...”
I am shaking as I turn around to face the three of them.
“We’re murder witnesses.”
