MONDAY
The lost day. did not sleep the night before. went to airport. not as early as planned - gary could not find his hat. got to the airport, alex dropped us off at alaska. found out we had to walk to other end of terminal as we were really on american and could not check in at alaska. plane was 40 minutes late leaving. we tried to sleep on the plane, due to no sleep the night before and wanting to move our internal clocks ahead to Zurich time.
got to new york. had our typical "we are not quite sure where to go" argument. i got to cast the deciding vote as i had looked up map of jfk before leaving seattle. had to leave secured area, take train, check in, go through security again and, as always, walk to the end of the terminal for our gate. between the plane being late in arriving, extensive distance to travel between flights, we just made it to the gate as the flight was boarding. during this whole process we realized that gary had left his hat (remember he couldn't find his hat he had planned to take so brought along his expensive bowler hat) in the plane.
We got on our swiss flight (much nicer plane, even though airbus) and waited on the runway for over an hour as the plane had to go through two de-icings. we got drinks and snacks, so that helped.
the airbus had individual screens in our section. we could watch movies, play tetris, listen to audio, track flight progress or call other seats in the plane. we were served dinner - which we did not expect. the food was very good. we tried to sleep on the flight, i was probably more successful than gary. the lights came on about an hour before the flight was through and we were served breakfast.
we landed in zurich right on time, strong tailwinds helped us recover the time lost to the delayed start. so, only 15 hours had passed, but it was 24 hours later. we were ready to start our first day in zurich.
