NOTE: There are no major spoilers for Secret Avengers #25. There may end up being some in the comments, I don't know. However, maybe not because the bit I want to talk about isn't the spoiler thing.
What I wanted to bring up was this comment to Jim from the Deathlock version of Miss America. It really threw me for a loop.
"I remember the way you looked at me. All the gals knew the Tin-Man was hot blooded. I was frightened of you then..." (the rest of her sentence is cult-worship talk)
Hot blooded? All the gals knew this? Did she fact check this with Jackie? He frightened her? What?
This description for me would fit many Marvel characters (Namor, Clint, Johnny, Scott, Emma Frost, to name a few), but Jim Hammond? Really?
I'll agree he can be awkward with women and he moved very fast with Anne, and was possibly more than "fatherly" in his feelings toward Tara (I don't have all of New Invaders, but it seemed like they were going in that direction with Tara and Jim, anyone know for sure?). However, from all his interactions with people, even the romantic ones, I don't get "hot-blooded" from any of them, just horribly awkward and insecure, and certainly not in any way that ever seemed to worry any of his female team mates. Not even Jackie, who seems to be the most frequent focus of Jim's desires.
Now, I agree he can be very hot tempered, and scary as heck when angered, but given the "I remember how you looked at me" preface to the hot-blooded description, I don't think she's talking his temper, and also, "temper" is not the common meaning of that phrase, so yeah…
It just really throws me though because that's so much not how I think of Jim, and I'd like to think canon supports me, but my headcanon can sometimes overshadow real canon. And, while I read anything with Jim I can get my hands on, it's far from everything, so did I miss something? Is there something in a Jim appearance I've not read that may validate the characterization here?
If not, I'm chalking the comment up to Maddy being a bigot (which is canon) and taking Jim's good natured, fairly normal, interactions out of context.
