I did not stay up until midnight New Year's. Yeah, I know that's a party foul, but seeing as I had to be awake at 6 a.m. and high functioning for the rest of the day, it seemed like a good idea.
So why was I getting up at such an ungodly hour of the morning on New Year's Day? Because I had an Indonesian dance performance in the early afternoon! I had to be at my instructor's house at 8 a.m. to get into hair, make-up (honestly I think the eyes took about an hour), and garb, and then do refresher run-through or two before driving to Wheaton, Maryland. This particular dance I was performing had not been rehearsed all the way through until the day before, which was also the time that I found out I was the *only* one who was going to be on stage for this one. That's right. I had a solo for an Indonesian dance that I had only finished learning the day before, in front of a room full of Indonesian nationals and an ambassador later that evening.
My parents came out to support me and had a lot of fun. The dance went well, and I received several compliments on it afterwords, and the ambassador mentioned there are scholarships to go to Indonesia and learn Indonesian dance. I'm not sure how I could take 3 months off outside of maternity leave though, and I'm not about to have a baby in order to do so. It's nice to know the offer exists though.
There was a dangdut dance contest later that evening. I did not know how to dance to dangdut, not that there seemed to be any formal way though I did here about some characteristics after the fact. In any case, I just danced, and came in second for the dance contest, which netted a prize of $50. Woohoo! People liked my dancing!
The evening could have gone south after that that when returning to the car, we found the battery was dead. We decided at the last minute to take my car, and since I had no clue how to get there, I let someone who did drive and drop us off before parking... with the headlights still on. Luckily some calm thinking, jumper cables (I really appreciate that roadside assistance kit) and a good Samaritan later, and the car hummed to life again and we were soon on our way. The only downside was that I got a massive cold, but I think it was worth it.
Now that I have internet in the apartment, I need to get find someplace to post pictures. I opened a deviant art account not too long ago. I haven't posted my own stuff yet, but I'm accumulating a gallery of other people's art that I like. I'll see if I can upload some pictures from the dance.
