Time to put calorie counting and healthy living on hold, at least temporarily - it’s Paczki time in Hamtramck.
The Polish community traditionally celebrates Paczki Day the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday to use up the lard, butter and other baking goods given up by many Catholics for Lent. But guests can celebrate the sticky-sweet delicacies Saturday in Hamtramck at the 2009 Annual Paczki Day Celebration, a free event held under a giant tent in the shopping plaza at Holbrook and Jos. Campau.
Guests can eat free mounds of the custard and fruit-filled fried dough, compete in paczki tossing or check out the paczki bake-off competition. Visitors can also hear live polka music by Misty Blues and see traditional Polish dancers.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 313-876-7700.
