Remembering You
Chapter 1: One Of Those Days I’ll Never Forget

Kwon Yuri and Im Yoona had an hour of free period today. Mrs. Kim, their Physics teacher, was absent. Usually, she’d leave a seatwork to answer, but her substitute just decided to grant her class some well-deserved free time since their examinations had just ended.

Enjoying every bit of the very rare free time they had in school, Yuri and Yoona were having a picnic over at the school garden. Instead of normally having a basket full of picnic goodies with them, they just bought sandwiches and orange juice from the canteen for their little free time had just been decided upon today.

While Yuri was busy chewing on her sandwich and just enjoying the fine weather, Yoona was already studying for History, their next subject. Yuri just shot her best friend a look of disbelief. When will Yoona stop thinking about her academic standing?

“Ya, Yoona.. Can you stop studying? Look at your sandwich.. You’ve been holding it for the past few minutes yet it hasn’t been touched.” Yuri said as she pointed at Yoona’s barely eaten sandwich with her free hand. “You know, one of these days, you’re going to die of hunger. I mean, look at you.. It seems as if you’ve got a love affair with your textbooks.” Yuri added. “I’m sorry, Yul.. It’s just that.. You know me, right? I’m a self-proclaimed nerd.” Yoona said as she looked up and arranged her eye-glasses.

Ever since Yoona was little, she had always been a straight A student. She’s always been number 1 when it comes to academics. To tell you the truth, Yoona is every teacher’s dream student. Besides actively participating in class, she’s got a very pleasant attitude which makes a lot of people love her. (Just don’t talk to her whenever she’s having a bad day because all she does is talk and talk and talk. Believe me, Yuri’s ears have bled so much because of her best friend’s rants.)

“Yoong, I know you are a nerd. Ever since I sat beside you during our first day of school in kindergarten, I knew you were already a genius.” Yuri said, recalling that fateful day she sat beside a little girl whose hair was tied in pig tails and had really big eyeglasses on. “Stop flattering me, will you? I can feel my head growing bigger and bigger by the minute.” Yoona joked as she finally took a bite of her sandwich. Yuri just smiled back at her best friend. Thank God, Yoona knew how to keep up with her antics.

Once she was done eating, Yuri checked the time on her watch. As soon as she saw there was about 10 minutes left of their free time, she started panicking deep inside. She was so pre-occupied with her little picnic with Yoona that she had totally forgotten about what was supposed to happen right now.

“Yoona, we’ve got to go to the soccer field!” Yuri said as she stood up abruptly. Yoona was startled by her best friend’s sudden gesture that she almost let go of the cup filled with orange juice she was holding.
“Soccer field? Why?” Yoona wondered. “No questions. Just come with me!” Yuri said as she dragged Yoona to the place she was supposed to be at.

As Yuri and Yoona ran past the hallways, they bumped into some people that reacted with a, “Ya, watch where you’re going next time!” or an “Ugh.. Yuri and Yoona running again. When will they stop being chodings and accept the fact that they’re already high school seniors?”. Everyone was just used to seeing these two messing around.

Upon reaching the entrance of the soccer field, Yuri let go of Yoona’s hand and panted. The school’s garden was pretty far from the soccer field, you know.

“One of these days, I’ll really find myself in the hospital because of you.” Yoona told Yuri as she rubbed a part of her arm that seemed to have a little formation of a bruise. She might’ve bumped into one of the basketball players again.

“Look, Yoong.. Now’s not the time to think about that.” Yuri said, still trying to catch her breath from all the running. “Why don’t you just turn around and walk to the middle of the field so that the pain I’m feeling in my legs right now will be all worth it.” Yuri said as she started pushing Yoona into the soccer field.

“Wait, wait, wait.. Something fishy’s going on.” Yoona said as she stopped herself from giving in to Yuri’s powerful force. “What is this all about, Yuri?” She added. “Oh, come on, Yoona.. This really isn’t the time to answer all your questions. Just.. turn around.” Yuri said, forcefully turning Yoona around.

As soon as Yuri wasn’t able to hear anything from Yoona, she knew that her best friend had seen the person that never failed to make her heart beat faster than it usually did. The person who made her cheeks so red that when her classmates looked at her, they thought she was suffering from an almost heat stroke.

Donning his soccer attire, Lee Donghae was in middle of the field. He had just finished soccer practice and it was quite obvious how he was waiting for someone to arrive.

“According to a trusted source, Donghae’s next class is in.. hmmm.. 5 minutes. So, if you still wanna talk to him, you better start moving.” Yuri said, causing Yoona to move. Though she knew it was lie, it was better that it came out of her mouth or else.. Yoona would just stand there and stare.

5 minutes. 5 more minutes left. Those were the words that kept playing on Yoona’s mind. Though she wanted to slow down, she just couldn’t. If ever she did, there wouldn’t be that much time left for her and Donghae to.. talk.

Yoona just kept looking down as she walked that she didn’t know she had already bumped into him. “Uh.. I’m so sorry.” Yoona said as she fixed her eye-glasses. It was, sort of, her mannerism whenever she was around Donghae. “Don’t worry. I bump into people all the time.” Donghae said, smiling at her. It was true, anyways. Though he was the team captain of their school’s soccer team, Donghae sure didn’t know how to watch where he was going.

“So, um.. Yuri set you up, didn’t she?” Yoona asked. She had to uncover the “truth”. “Well, partly, yeah.. But, most of what’s going to happen right now.. I’m the mastermind behind it.” Donghae admitted, shyly. How he wished Yoona didn’t see him blush.

“Um.. I’ve been wanting to tell you this for so long, it’s just that.. I haven’t found the right time.” Donghae said, referring to the countless times he had wanted to confess how he really felt for Yoona. If not for the catching up for the examinations and the never-ending soccer practices, perhaps, Yoona had known of Donghae’s feelings for her a long time ago.

“Yoona,” Donghae said, but was cut off due to the sudden roar of the skies. Both he and Yoona couldn’t help but smile. Maybe the skies just wanted Donghae to be straight forward to Yoona. “I like you. I really, really do. Though most people say you’re a nerd, I don’t really care because I know that beneath those eye-glasses of yours is a pretty girl with a really big heart.” Donghae said.

“When you think I’m not looking, I really am.” Donghae admitted which made Yoona’s cheeks so red that she had to look away. “Well, not in the perverted sense, of course.” Donghae added quickly, to which both he and Yoona laughed at.

“Remember the time when the soccer team and the math club teamed up for some auction for a cause? Well, I couldn’t do my job properly because my eyes were focused on you the whole time.” Donghae admitted as flashbacks of that auction night were playing in his mind. Yoona and her fellow club mates in the Math club were busy counting the money they had earned while Donghae and his teammates were the ones giving the items that were to be auctioned.

Though she was just there, sitting and counting money, Yoona still looked like a goddess. Donghae just kept looking and looking at her that he accidentally dropped an antique vase that cost about 500, 000 won. Because of his charm and his little excuse that “his hands were tired from carrying all the heavy items”, he was able to get away with paying for it. But if his teacher was blind, one of his teammates weren’t. From that day on, he had started teasing Donghae to Yoona.

Thank God the school Donghae and Yoona were in wasn’t really that focused on all those cliques like in American schools. I mean, if it were, everyone would be hating on Yoona since Donghae was one of the school’s hottest guys. And to be honest, that was last thing Donghae wanted for Yoona.

“Oh, really? You were looking at me?” Yoona asked, her cheeks turning really red. She never thought Lee Donghae had his eyes on her ever since. “Yeah, just like a normal high school boy does when he sees a high school girl who makes his world stop turning.” Donghae said, using the line his older brother used when he confessed to his current girlfriend who he’s been together for almost 5 years. Donghae didn’t really care if he copied his brother’s style. I mean, it could be associated to how he was feeling for Yoona.

“Well, I just wanted you to know, that what you’re feeling for me isn’t a one-sided love. I like you too, Lee Donghae and if I were to enumerate the many reason why I do, we’d be standing here till midnight.” Yoona admitted, making Donghae smile.

“It would be really fast if I asked you to become my girl friend right now, so I think that the perfect way for us to really fall in love with each other is for us to take it slow.” Donghae said. Yes, he did like Yoona, but he just needed to know her more. “Yeah, I totally agree, let’s take it slow.” Yoona nodded.

For a moment, there was silence. All Donghae and Yoona could hear were their synchronized hearts beating.

“I know we agreed to take it slow, but.. I just wanted to do this.” Donghae said, pulling in closer and closer.

The moment Yoona felt his soft lips against her red cheeks, the rain had started falling.
