Title: Score
Author: fadedpresence
Fandom: Twilight
Prompt: Score, #7 at twilightathon
Characters/Pairing: Edward/Bella, small Jacob cameo.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Very minor spoilers for Eclipse. Nothing drastic.
Word Count: 1,600 approx.
Summary: Edward and Bella have a score to settle.
Notes: I unfortunately don’t own the characters, Stephenie Meyer has that privilege. This is set sometime soon after the events in Eclipse, before the meadow and before the epilogue. This is typical fluff. We all need fluff.

Edward Cullen had his own certain way of making me breathless.

He’d start by stroking down my arms with icy fingers, prickling the hairs there just slightly until my whole body was sensitive to his touch. He’d smile when he realized what he was doing to me, slightly backing off in fear of my ‘combustion’ as I had once put it.

I blushed a scarlet red.

“No matter how long I’ve know you, Bella Swan, that never ceases to amuse me.”

We lay entangled on my bed, me beneath the covers and Edward on top of them. He constantly insisted that his body temperature was bad for my health, no matter how much I debated the topic with him. I’d lay there, teeth chattering without the blanket, but that didn’t mean parts of me were cold. Especially not my heart.

Edward pressed his nose against the crook of my neck. I felt his smile against my skin.

“Edward…” I cautioned. “You know how I’m prone to getting carried away. And then I make myself look stupid…”

Edward kept his face where it was, his fingers pressing deeper into my forearm. “I don’t think you’re stupid. Quite the contrary, actually…”

I wriggled slightly in the blankets, hating the pure torture he put me through. Who was I kidding? It’s not like anything would come from this… his kisses.

Edward would stop in about two minutes, before anything went too far. Then I’d feel stupid, having to apologise and hearing his apologies in return. Then we’d both end up frustrated.

Predictably, Edward would end this with a sermon on how it was time for me to go to sleep.

But I was desperate for any contact with him. So desperate that part of me didn’t mind the torture, even though I knew it would end just as it was getting good.

I turned to face Edward, threading my hands around the back of his neck and in the tufts of copper hair just above. I had thought on more than one occasion that his hair was probably the only part of his appearance that wasn’t truly vampire. There was a certain softness to his hair, not unlike his eyelashes, whereas his skin was smooth and cool like glass.

His lips hovered against mine, his hand resting on my waist.

When our lips met, my body erupted in the usual display of inner fireworks and blazing fire. I couldn’t breathe, but it was in a good way. Edward and I were trapped in our little bubble; nobody could get in, and more importantly, nobody could get out. My hands ran through his hair like I was starved for life, starved of my senses.

Edward’s lips weren’t the same as they usually were. They weren’t cautious and measured. They were desperate and eager, almost as much as mine were.

When he rolled on top of me, I gave an inner cheer and coiled my legs around his.

Edward broke away, smiling mischievously. I, on the other hand, was gasping and wide-eyed.

“I think I win that round,” he whispered. Since when had this been about scores?

His lips pressed to mine again, a sweet pressure I could lose myself in all too happily.

My hands ran down his neck, the temperature cooling my palms that were growing all too hot.

I pushed my body closer against his, wrapping his hand in mine until our fingers were laced. I think I held my heart in my hand, for I could feel my pulse there, echoing through his palm like a ticking clock.

However, I was not about to let Edward win this round.

All too surprisingly, he let me push against him until we were lying next to each other once again, and I had half my body draped over his. Hands still wound, I let my hair fan around his face like a silk curtain until he murmured something against our joined lips.

“Stop, please,” he said, that voice hard. I edged away gently, biting my lip. Edward’s eyes were closed over, though he did not let go of my hand. He had told me that he was over this, that he could resist the lure of my blood… but I knew this expression, knew the tone to his voice all too well. My blood brought out the vampire in him.

When Edward’s eyes opened slightly, he only smiled, a certain glint in his eye. I breathed out a puff of relief.

“We’re tied now,” I laughed lightly, squeezing his hand in mine. “I’m sorry.”

“I will beat you, you know… I won’t let you win at this game,” Edward chuckled, leaning towards my face to begin another kiss. I was eager to find out just how sure he was about winning, when he paused, his eyes darting out my bedroom window, cautious as ever.

“What is it?” I breathed, leading my eyes to the curtains blowing in the breeze.

“Jacob Black,” Edward said, his words pure acid. A small spark of hope came to life inside my chest. If Jake was visiting, it meant he was better… I bit my lip. It also meant Edward and I wouldn’t get to continue our little game. I was looking forward to having him out-score me.

Jacob’s hands appeared, grabbing onto the windowsill with brute inhuman strength. Edward turned up his nose, shaking his head. Surprisingly, he didn’t move away from me. We lay there, our legs a tangle of limbs and our hands clasped together in an unbreakable hold.

When Jake was able to hoist himself inside my room, he gave the same reaction Edward had. He turned up his nose at the sight of us, and the obvious smell a werewolf gets from a vampire. I had heard it was sickly sweet, though I couldn’t agree. Edward’s scent was my favourite scent, an exquisite aroma that never ceased to-

“Jacob,” Edward interrupted my thoughts, his voice hard and stern.

“Obviously, you’re preoccupied,” Jacob said, glaring at Edward before his gaze turned to me. It softened, only slightly.

“Didn’t you use your nose? You could’ve made sure I wasn’t here before suddenly materializing.”

I scowled at their bickering, squeezing Edward’s hand in light assurance.

“You’re feeling better?” I asked Jake, a huge goofy grin on my face.

“Back to my old self,” Jake beamed back. I heard an almost inaudible growl from Edward, which was no doubt accompanied by a bit of eye-rolling.

“I called earlier, but Charlie said you were out with one of the- I mean, Alice,” he said gruffly, glancing at Edward.

“I was,” I nodded. Edward looked at me sideways. This was not entirely true… I had been with Edward, but I had told Charlie I was with Alice so he thought I was ‘dividing my time fairly’ between my friends. Just yesterday I had been out with Angela and Ben… or so Charlie thought.

“Anyway, I figured I should come and say hello. Show that I am being more mature about this. Being around him, I mean,” Jacob said, nodding towards Edward. “And… since you’re never without him or the others, I couldn’t exactly pick and choose…”

“Well, thanks, Jake,” I nodded, my eyes earnest as I smiled. “It’s good to know you’re feeling better.”

“Now if you don’t mind,” Edward interrupted, his eyes hard as they glared at Jacob. A shirtless, Jacob, may I add. Obviously Edward didn’t approve, especially since Jacob had in fact invited himself in my bedroom.

“I don’t mind,” Jacob said, grinning. “I wanted to talk to Bella, actually.”

“She’s busy,” Edward was quick to snap back.

“With you?”

“Yes, with me. Who else?”

“Who else indeed…” Jacob mused, smiling.

“Jake, cut it out!” I said, my voice sharp. I nudged closer to Edward. “He’s right, we are kind of busy. I’ll come down to La Push later, with Charlie… I heard he’s watching the game with Billy tonight. We’ll talk then.”

Jacob rolled his eyes, his smile disappearing.

“Sure, sure… You should hang a sign on your window, you know… ‘visitors not welcome’. Might actually stop people from bothering to visit you.”

“Might also stop unwanted guests…” Edward whispered.

I sighed, closing my eyes. The two of them were impossible.

“Fine, see you tonight, Bella,” Jacob quipped, turning towards the window. “See you some other time, Edward.”

He disappeared out the window without another word.

“You should’ve resisted the urge to encourage him,” I said to Edward, lying back down next to him until I was snuggled into his side once more. “He is a lot younger than you.”

“He’s still old enough,” Edward retorted, smoothing my hair against my face. “Besides, I can’t help being jealous. He walks in here, shirtless. It’s obviously some kind of ploy to make you want him.”

“Oh, please,” I laughed, trailing my free hand down Edward’s chest. “You look just as good. If not better… “

Edward kissed my lips with the slightest of touches, before drawing his face away from mine again.

“If I’m not mistaken…” he said, laughing softly. “I did promise I’d win this game.”

“Oh, really?” I answered back, trying to sound as flirtatious as possible. I knew I was bad at it.

“So the score stands,” Edward said, musing. “Bella: one, Edward: two.”

“Two?” I blurted out, laughing. “Last time I checked, we were tied.”

“I did get rid of Jacob. That counts as one.”

“Excuse me, I got rid of Jake.”

“Fine, Bella: one, Edward: one. We’re back to where we started. Care for a tie-breaker?”
