Okay so I literally have 31 minutes to write this and eat my
mini-lunch consisting of yogurt and coffee before my acting class, so
here we go.
First off, my French and English classes were wonderful this morning
and that put me in a lovely mood. But afterward, I immediately walk
over to PBK on Mondays and Wednesdays because I have like an hour
before my class there (acting) and I hang out and grab a quick bite. So
I stop into the costume shop to see Mary Jo, as usual, and talk to her
about getting cast, and I am officially hired as a costume shop
assistant! THE costume shop assistant! I will be working Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 2pm-4:30pm right after my final class at 1:50pm. I get
paid a bit more than minimum wage, which is fine, just enough to
counter act my voice lesson costs. AND FURTHERMORE, Mary Jo wants me to
work as head of wardrobe for Little Shop of Horrors because "I'm so
good at it and she can trust me", but when I'm doing that (in November)
I won't be able to work during the day because it's too many hours. But
that will be A HEAPING LOAD OF CASH because of all the nighttime work
and basically --- I will be rolling in it, sort of.
So that was nice to hear, she's so sweet. But then I went upstairs to
see if Dr. Palmer was in his office to say hello. He wasn't, but
Christopher was in his and I stopped in to say hi. And the following
ensued. Get ready:
1. So he congratulated me on getting cast, and especially my audition
piece (not the callback, the one from the Lark I read in front of him
and Laurie) he was especially impressed by and here's why. Remember
that he suggested me as Sandy, not Jean? Well, he said that when I read
the piece from The Lark, which you would normally expect to be a
youthful, younger piece because of Joan's age, it came off especially
mature and vibrant--particularly when I took the adjustment from Laurie
to be more condescending. He said I completely blew him away (my words,
but that's what he meant). So he remembered my audition from FOUR DAYS
AGO and was commenting on how good it was. So I thanked him and gushed
about the play and blah blah blah. :-D
2. Then he sort of leaned back in his chair and said, "So tell me about
this Richmond Shakespeare audition ..." and I must have turned like
bright pink and he continued "... because Grant and I had a
conversation the day or two afterwards." (Grant is the Richmond
Shakespeare director I auditioned for). I explained that I heard about
it like the last day of VSF and said to myself, 'Well that would work.
I might as well try it, just for some experience.' And Christopher
explained:
"Yes, so Grant and I had a conversation about you and he said
that he had you read for Hero, right? (I said yes) He had a specific
actor in mind for Claudio, who was significantly older, and his concern
that casting you against him would look a bit like 'cradle-robbing'
because I was young.' So do not for a minute think that his lack of
casting you had anything to do with your audition, because he was
extremely impressed and both he and I suggest that you audition for
Richmond Shakespeare again in the future."
*SQUEAL!*
3. I continued talking about my plans and mentioned that I was planning
on screening for and auditioning for the SETC in the spring, to which
Christopher said, "You know you have to go through the Virginia Theatre
Association..." And I said yes I did. And he said, "Oh, you'll make it,
easily. Don't even think about it." (Meanwhile, I'm beaming.)
4. I then mentioned the Crimes of the Heart auditions for Chamberlayne
Actor's Theatre in Glen Allen in October and how the show itself fits
neatly into my winter break and I could do it, if cast, easily without
it interfering with anything going on at WM. I mentioned that I thought
there was a part for an actress my age (the young sister) and he nodded
and said, "Yes, that's absolutely right."
5. And here's the biggest one and then I have to run. And I sort of
added, "And then, of course, I plan on auditioning for VSF again." And
he's sort of nodding, so I continue... "Have you thought of what you're
doing for this season?" And he smiles and nods his head vaguely.
"Unofficially? Okay, well don't tell me that, but ... (and I say this
very diplomatically) would you advise me to audition for VSF again in
the spring based on your unofficial opinion of what you have in mind
for the shows?" And he smiles and very, VERY quietly and seriously
says, "Yes. Yes, I do. I advise you to audition again. But I think I
better tell my wife what I have in mind, before I tell you so ... but
yes."
SO BASICALLY HE'S TELLING ME HE SEES A PART FOR ME IN THE NEXT SEASON
OF VSF! AND THE RUMOR AROUND PBK IS THAT HE'S THINKING OF DOING HAMLET!
SO --- KEEP IT REAL --- IF THAT IS TRUE, THE ONLY POSSIBLE PART I WOULD
HAVE IN THAT SHOW IS OPHELIA!!!! OPHELIA!!! HE COULD BE CONSIDERING ME
FOR OPHELIA!!! I MIGHT BE IN VSF THIS SUMMER!!!
AaaaaaaaaaASAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I left his office completely, COMPLETELY exhausted and shaking.
Seriously. This whole acting thing? Apparently, it's working for me.
Professional directors. Are interested. In me. *GAAAH*
