my morning jacket's "Z" CD that has a ridiculous, invasive and insecure DRM'd scheme. read on.
DRM Crippled CD: A bizarre tale in 4 parts:
This tale is part of a larger struggle within the recording and digital download industry -- not of P2P or piracy -- but one of innovation and competition. As you follow this odd story (broken into 4 increasingly strange parts), you will note that as it gets weirder, Artists and Consumers are the collateral damage. It makes one wonder just what the hell the Recording Industry is thinking about these days
Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far (more technical):
Rootkits are cloaking technologies that hide files, Registry keys, and other system objects from diagnostic and security software, and they are usually employed by malware attempting to keep their implementation hidden
the DRM measures do NOT work on linux/unix/mac os x (the DRM works so well on windows because of a major security flaw inherent in its design). i ripped the cd to itunes on my powerbook just fine. not only that, sony also sells their stuff on iTunes music store not wanting to lose any revenue. so what is the net effect of this cheap shot at apple? 80% of the portable music player market will be fucking pissed and go for the alternative: apple computers and the itunes music store. idiot sony.
