Nov 25, 2007 23:27

So uh today we saw "House of D" on TV cuz y'know it was just kind of on.

I think you can tell by the icon exactly who the main character in the movie reminded me of. (If you're following my NaNo anyway, that is.)

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO are in secondheavenbbs and DON'T KNOW, I'm having a minor dilemma over my ONE SPOT which will open when Mike graduates in March ( Read more... )

i need a life, guindoisms

This has nothing to do with your post and I don't even know you, but I want to tell you that I am very, very glad to see your posts in those LJ announcement threads. You seem to be one of the few who is able to see the current "lol censorship i haets lj" issue with a clear head. LJ is full of drama mules and they're just using this as another excuse to rage against the machine cause it feels better than actually admitting that LJ doesn't want to get their asses sued.

:)

So yeah. Know that someone, at least, appreciates your posts.

Oh, thank you so much! Every time I post on a news thread I end up getting in some kind of argument with one of those people and I spend all night telling my friends "WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF?!" But I try so hard to keep a level head and stay civil, so I'm really glad somebody appreciates that!

Oh believe me, I do. I am already tired of the knee-jerk reactions plastering my Friends Page. And it's like, shut the hell up already. Most of those people have no idea what they're talking about. I'll bet everyone throwing around legal terms has never even stepped foot in a firm.

All LJ wants to do is ensure they don't get sued. And it's not like these brats can't go to Greatest Journal or something. Why do they just sit and complain?

Some people are just never happy with anything. There was drama over comment editing too and the majority of LJ users have been asking for that function since I first got here (back when we had invite codes). People still raised a huge fuss about it, some of them just because it wasn't the policy update.

I'm being told that it can't be a cover-your-ass move on LJ's part because they're already protected and this just makes it easier to find instead of harder to access, but it is. It's just like rating movies R, or video games M, if kids get access to them and somebody complains then the companies can say, "We put the warning there, it's not our responsibility."

Which goes back to my comment about these brats not having ANY knowledge of the legal system.

I had to laugh though, in the news update, about the guy who bitched about LJ talking about Thanksgiving and how they shouldn't be so "American" or something. It sometimes astounds me, the ignorance you find here. You'd think people would THINK before hitting "submit" but.

I remember back when they were deleting journals for posting pictures of naked underaged boysex, one of the people on my Friends List posted a huge long angry rant about how this was "it" and she was "leaving LJ permanently" and a month later? There she is, updating her journal. :D

I wrote a rant about these people in my journal and I'm waiting for my Friends List to flame me.

I won't lie. I lol'd when I read that.

LJ users are all a bunch of whiners, really. We threaten to leave, this is always "the last straw," but it never really happens, the camel's back never breaks, it's a hardy fucking camel, it just gets really pissed off and pisses everyone else off because it keeps bitching about how it's done but it's really not leaving! I remember people threatening to leave after invite codes were abolished and LJ was made open registration. It's been going on for yeeears.

I remember that VAGUELY. I can't even remember if I slipped in before the invite codes were mandatory, or if they were always mandatory and I just got one from someone, or what.

LJBiz has devolved into arguing whether it's superior to have both parents of a child working, or one parent staying home. What this has to do with "nanny states" and wanting your child to not be exposed to buttsex is a mystery to me.

Just goes to show people will argue about and get offended by anything. But at least there are still people like you who aren't afraid to speak up and verbally bitchslap the morons.

...Sigh, people. Nothing to do with anything. I get the nanny state concerns (because it is a problem in the US and it is the reason this function has been made), but really it's a procedure in place for parents to use. Instead of having to hover over your kids every time they use the internet (like some people are saying they should), they just have to be there to make sure they put down the right age when they sign up. So I mean, it's not entirely a bad idea, but there are ways around it. People aren't getting the fact that there's a difference between censorship and rating. It's not a censorship system, it's a rating system.

Haha well, I just like to try and discuss things with some degree of civility, because then you can get past the initial defensiveness of your opponent's argument and end up with a real discussion a few comments down the line.

Yeah but most of the issues with "nanny states" I hear are "I shouldn't be forced to wear my seat belt, it doesn't affect anyone else!" or "How dare they say I can't smoke indoors!" I feel like it's always the two extremes arguing with each other. The fact is, people are stupid, and we do need safeguards in place to ensure their stupidity doesn't harm other people. But people always view it as a slippery slope. I'm surprised they haven't done that with this yet.

"OMG IF LIVEJOURNAL IS GOING TO FILTER OUR CONTENT, THEN THEY'RE GOING TO EVENTUALLY RULE EVERY FACET OF OUR LIVES! THEY'LL ALLOW GAY MARRIAGE AND THEN CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT SHALL COLLAPSE."

I kinda wanna troll and say something like that.

Yeah but you seem to be fighting the hard fight against people too stupid to realize they're wrong, or that there's more to discuss than that their feelings are somehow hurt.

It is two extremes fighting, it's kind of like American politics. We have the left-wingers and the right-wingers and the middle-of-the-road silent majority is just sort of left in the cold because the loud extremists keep taking it too far on each side.

It's sad that we live in a country where LJ has to do this just to safeguard themselves. I mean, it really is ridiculous how little people will actually sue over.

I guess I'll keep fighting it then, even if I spend every news post night hating myself for getting into it XD

And the only thing that gets people more riled up than politics is religion and, now, LJ Decisions.

Suing is the American Past Time, like drinking is for Russians. When I worked at a law firm, I loved hearing the attorneys recount the idiocies they'd encountered. But we also cater to these people. If you trip over something in a store that is in plain sight, it's still somehow the store's fault cause you can't be held responsible to actually know what's going on around you. It's all faulty.

I just stumbled across one where people are insisting LJ has no right to know their date of birth. Cause, you know, that's the equivalent of asking for your social security number and now LJ mods are going to steal their identities and buy a whole ton of cars and ruin their credit. And then they bitch about parents who feel they're entitled to things. O_o;;

Don't discuss LJ policy in polite company!

Yeah, I ran across somebody in LJbiz who complained about needing to make up a fake birthday because their real one was none of LJ's business. The only thing your birthday is used for is determining your age and sending your friends birthday notifications. I don't get it. People are so ridiculous sometimes. I guess it's true when they say that common sense isn't very common anymore.

I'm just curious as to why people are bitching. The mod even said that no content was going to be removed. No one's going to get deleted. So...what? What's the issue? That underaged kids need to get past an additional screen?

Clearly they've never tried to access porn sites, which do the same exact thing.

I do fault LJ, however, for not making a post explaining things better. Cause most of these people aren't going to read every single comment and find the answer to their questions; they are going to ask them over, and over, and over again, and insist that LJ never listens to them.

I think (or I hope, at least), that all the answers given in the comments will eventually be consolidated into the main post as a sort of FAQ, because they couldn't think of everything they needed to address without people actually addressing it first.

Well, they could have at least said up front that no content would be deleted, no journals would be purged, etc. That's probably a big reason why the more rational people are worried about this.

The rest...they can't do anything about. People still fling about "I have RIGHTS and FREEDOMS and FIRST AMENDMENT" without understanding what they're talking about. I just feel bad for marta who's trying hard to answer questions, but she has to repeat herself 29384098234 times.

I feel really bad for her too, but I really appreciate the time and energy she's sacrificing for this.

They should have said it up front, which is entirely their bad. But I think they just assumed that people would know since it wasn't mentioned that it wasn't happening.
