Back in the Devil's house

A production epartment quality tech had a turbine houseing for me to complain and I took a sample with me incase my supplier  wanted it returned. He mentioned how heavy it was and i told him I was a former tank soldier and we calle dsuch things ''kleine Teile.'' He was a BW self proppeled artillery piece driver and we got to talking. He mentioned his volunteer fire department here in Kibo.

I may start training in september.

Its been three years since I left Barren River Fire and Rescue. I was a Captain/Training Officer and I would settle for sweeping the fire hause floor as long as I am back on a department. I called fire fighting a hobby, but it was far more than that too me. It was a part of life, nearly a way of life. Think football meets chess, but its for real. A mistake can kill you or get somebody else killed. To do the best ppossible job and still fail could mean somebody is now homeless or dead. I dont have a hero complex. I spent a lot of my non training off the fire ground time keeping up with recordas and organizeing things. The Greens are all about the enviroment. Punks are totaly againts anything they percive as Right. My pet issue is smoke detectors. With German building meathods its not such an issue here, but in America houses the extra time to excape is needed.

My x-mass gift to my self would have to be a new bailout line for the old ''its a good time to go head first out the window'' time  and a good helmet light. (You cant see shit in a fire) I still have medic shears and a way to clip them to my jacket.

I would have to come back to Kibo early one weekend per month, but to serve on anuther fire department.............

I always liked this:

''I have no ambition in this world but one and that is to be a Fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, be a lowly one. But we who know the work the Fireman has to do believe that his is a Noble Calling. There is an adage which says, "Nothing can be destroyed, except by fire". We strive to preserve from destruction the wealth of the world, which is the product of the industry of men, necessary for the comfort of both the rich and the poor. We are defenders from fires of the art which has beautified the world, the product of the genius of men and the means of refinement of mankind. But above all, our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men - the work of God Himself. Under the impulse of such thoughts the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring - even at the supreme sacrifice. Such considerations may not strike the average mind, but they are sufficient to fill to the limit our ambition in life and make us serve the general purpose of human society.''

Edward Crocker, the Chief of the Fire Department of the City of New York from 1899-1911
