Number of Stories:
Thirty-one? I wrote thirty-one fics? Although many of them were ficlets, only thousand or so words. This was the year I decided that writing little ficlets whenever I was in the mood wasn't a bad thing. Around this time last year I wasn't sure if I had anything left to say about John and Rodney. I suspect I am saying the same things over and over at this point, but it still makes me happy to write about them, so hey, why the heck not?
Five of the fics were co-authored with the delightful and witty
mmmchelle, and one fic was co-authored with the wonderfully talented and porny
yin_again.
I did dabble a tiny bit in a new fandom. Twenty eight fics were
John/Rodney, but the other three were Strachey Mysteries
Donald/Timmy ficlets. I can't wait for the new movie to come out, I'm looking forward to playing with them again.
Best Story:
Scenes from a Vacation. I was really happy with the way this one came out--John and Rodney's growing intimacy, and John figuring out that he was Rodney's boyfriend and realizing hey, he was okay with it. This was one of those fics that came just the way I had imagined it in my head. And writing it was a very enjoyable experience. I love vacation fics, so this was a totally self-indulgent writing experience.
I also think
Rodney McKay and the Crazed Gay Yenta is one of the best stories chelle and I have ever written together. She made me giggle so much. The idea for the fic was all hers and I think it's the perfect romantic comedy. *g*
Favorite Story:
Incandescent. The one where the SGC made them do it. I can't help it, I just love the idea of Rodney presenting his case to John. Rodney trying to convince John that they should have sex is a favorite theme of mine, considering I used it again in
The Blowjob Fic. Hmmm, also to some extent in
Like a Beacon in the Night. Clearly, I think Rodney is irresistibly cute when he's being persuasive.
Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe in My Opinion:
Again, like last year, I feel very appreciated so I can't really answer this one. *g* I feel kind of over-appreciated, actually. I can answer the opposite question and say that I was kind of surprised by the response to
Blue Skies, my Tao of Rodney post-ep ficlet. It was just a little bitty thing without much happening in it, but folks seemed to really enjoy it. ::feels warm and fuzzy::
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
I would have never predicted that I would write Strachey fic, but Donald and Timmy were just so adorable and domestic that I couldn't resist. Huh. I need to write some more of them.
Most Fun Story:
The Schedule, , with
mmmchelle. John and Rodney and a sex manual, how could that not be fun? Plus writing with chelle is always a good time. A very close runner-up would be
A Mr. Toe Christmas, because that was filled with warm fuzzies and love and Madison and Christmas cookies and all kinds of happy things.
A third runner-up would be
Warm to the Touch, since cuddling for warmth is one of my most favorite cliches ever.
Sexiest Story:
The Wristband Porn,, which was written with
yin_again. John is just so dirty in it. *g*
Sexiest Moment:
John and Rodney dancing together in
Rodney McKay and the Crazed Gay Yenta.
Biggest Disappointment:
I was looking at
my post from last year and I list 'not finishing my amnesia fic' as my biggest disappointment. So I can turn around and say that
actually finishing that darn fic was my biggest accomplishment.
I was somewhat disappointed with how
This is Not a Love Song came out. I kind of rushed through writing it because I was leaving on vacation the day it was due, and while I'm happy with some aspects of it (like Rodney being even more oblivious than John) I feel like it needed something more. Especially in the beginning. But I don't know what.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
The amnesia fic mentioned above,
The Life You Lead, was the biggest risk since it had a non-romance type plot mixed in. Plus I wrote it from the amnesiac's POV, which I realized about half-way through was the dumbest thing ever because it was really hard (when you're me, that is) and I had to think and plot and plan and really, it was just exhausting. I was fairly happy with the way it turned out, although that might just have been relief that I actually got the thing done.
Biggest Surprise:
Hmmm...that's a tough one. I was kind of surprised by
Five Times John and Rodney Didn't Have Sex because I was just goofing around and it turned into a coherent piece, rather than five random snippets. It really wasn't my intention.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
A Mr. Toe Christmas. I am a big sappy schmoopy thing at heart, and I love Christmas. But I guess that's not really a big secret now, is it? How about
The Life You Lead, then--would it surprise anyone that one of my favorite movies is "It's a Wonderful Life"? And that I never saw the similarities in theme while I was writing it?
Conclusions:
a. Even when I have nothing new to say about John and Rodney, I will keep writing fic because I adore them.
b. Rodney convincing John that they need to have sex (and lots of it) will never ever stop being amusing. And hot. Very, very hot.
c. I just might be the most self-indulgent fanfic writer on the planet.
d. John and Rodney continue to be hot like hot hot things.
I encourage everyone out there to do this meme, because it's really a lot of fun to look back over fics. And I love to read other folks thoughts on their writing.
