Can't stop won't stop talking about OUaT

Apr 04, 2012 00:15

I spent the morning browsing Tumblr and finding lots of reaction posts to the Regina episode, and reading lots of people's opinions, some of which, I think, make absolutely no sense. So I made a little selection of the best and worst of OUaT commentaries. I am serious about this - I took notes on my notebook and everything.

still under a spoiler cut because I don't want to make anyone angry. But some of these theories really are worth reading so I suggest coming back to this post once you've watched! just saying! )

I often find the people read too much into social justice related issues in TV shows/movies when it's just supposed to be taken at face-value and that bugs the crap out of me. :/

This was a brilliant comment. I guess because I'm not that into fandom, I didn't realise that this obviously would happen in other contexts as well - and it makes me EVEN MORE sad!!!

I totally agree with the first three theories. It was a very interesting episode!

Definitely my favourite episode so far. What do you think of the other theories?

Except that Regina can hate Snow because Snow is an inferior to her, both for age and intellect (at this stage at least); Regina cannot hate Cora because all her life she's been shown that she can't win against her and this is just another confirmation of it.
Yes. YES. People are all "there must be more to it", and maybe there is, but I totally won't mind if there isn't, because to me it already makes perfect sense why she's after Snow.

That guy was the most important thing to Regina at that time and sure, it was probably her first love and she didn't have much to compare it to, but she would feel hatred about it surely.
I totally agree with the whole point, but I don't even think that it was about him as much as it was about the fact that the relationship with him was her way out from the abuse.

This episode was really triggering and close-to-home for me and I'm not even sure if I can watch it again, but to me it means that it was very well done the way it is.

On one hand I am sorry that it was triggering, but on the other I agree with you that it already makes perfect sense. If it doesn't to some people, then I guess they just have a different setup to me as a person. I'm not even one of those people who say "hate" is too strong a word and I have never/could never hate anyone. It's just not me. I understand negative feelings of resentment, blame and hate without any trouble :P

Well, I can honestly say that I don't hate anyone, but not because "it's wrong and I shouldn't", it's just a total waste of energy to me. I leave bad people behind and live my own life for myself, which I find much more satisfying than any other reaction. But there are people (and fictional characters) who don't want to do this or cannot do this, and I may not understand their decisions, but I definitely understand their motivation.

I find it slightly unfair how certain things are romanticised on tv, but when they happen to real people, they become suddenly uncool. Like, I can say for certain Chiara is fascinated by certain tv characters who have the same kind of mental health problems as I have, only when it happens to them, they are interesting, layered characters, whereas I'm a real person and I should just "grow up", according to the common mentality.

you know what, that thing was so completely OTT I kinda felt I had to share it with others so I didn't have to bear the burden of its absurdity all on my own :P

I love this. It actually puts some of my thoughts into perspective on why I was so disappointed with the episode. You've helped me be a little less disappointed.
