Yeah, it’s been a good, long while. I know. Hence the need to update!
Life keeps going, and I know that’s quite the surprise, but it really does. Some exciting things have happened, and I feel I should make tribute to the positive in my life.
It’s the semester of “trying out” for internships. I went through all of the hassles. Finally figured out what the hell they meant by an essay that I should write and attach to my resume-my beautiful resume that uniquely identifies me (so much so that I was told to tone it down originally *wink*). I was offered many interviews, and I accepted and endured nine of them. I turned down few, obviously feeling that A) I don’t know much about the accounting firms in Ohio what with being Texas smart and Ohio stupid and B) feeling that the experience will not hurt me, merely strengthen my interviewing abilities.
Here’s (briefly) that schedule that happened in about a week (and I missed no class!):
Thursday, Sept. 28:
11-11:30 a.m. - Deloitte & Touche, LLP
Friday, Sept. 29:
8:30-9 a.m. - JM Smucker Company
1:15-1:45 p.m. - Novogradac & Company
Monday, Oct. 2:
10:45-11:15 a.m. - Cohen & Company
Tuesday, Oct. 3:
8-8:30 a.m. - Rea & Associates
Wednesday, Oct. 4:
8-8:30 a.m. - Meaden & Moore, Ltd.
11:15-12 p.m. - PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP
Thursday, Oct 5:
8-8:30 a.m. - Ernst & Young
Friday, Oct. 6:
12-1:45 p.m. - CBIZ (on site, 2nd interview)
The only one that a non-accounting major might recognize is Smuckers, but I’ve also been in contact with the recruiter from JoAnne Fabrics. It’s pretty cool.
So anyway. Akron had a blackout period until October 10th (Tuesday) at which point employers could start asking for second interviews. Novogradac called me at 9 a.m. that morning. I eventually managed to figure out a good way to turn them down since it’s out in Dover. (They said to keep them in mind when I graduate!) Pricewaterhouse turned me down the same day, which didn’t surprise me. I was asked to fill out their online application AGAIN, and I just didn’t do it. I suspect this is why they rejected me or maybe I'm in denial. On Thursday, Ernst & Young called, inviting me for a second interview on site. By Friday, I received Smuckers’s rejection letter, which did not come as a surprise either. I got lost on my way to their onsite job fair. I finally arrived about an hour and fifteen minutes late, and the door was locked. Supposedly I could have gotten in, but I don’t really believe the recruiter. I think he held it against me. Then I think I waited too long to send them my thank you email. I was pretty sure they’d turn me down, so it wasn’t a shock.
I haven’t heard from anyone else, and I realize I probably won’t until October 25th, the end of Akron’s second blackout period. That’s when companies and firms may start making offers (so everyone has a fair chance). I’m hoping that the lack of communication between those remaining five employers is a good sign and not a bad one.
However, the second interview with Ernst & Young was good from my side of it. They really have a way of making you fall immediately in love with them. I mean, it’s phenomenal, guys, absolutely amazing, and I really hope they make me an offer for the summer. *crosses fingers* Still won’t hear from them until the 25th though… *sigh*
With CBIZ, I had an in. Martha, my friend of the family/acquaintance, happens to work there, and she’s a partner. She set up multiple things, one of which was a lunch (way before on campus interviewing started) that included the recruiter, Anita. Anita apparently liked me and decided the informal lunch date would count as my interview. Then she decided she should still interview me (officially) like the other candidates, so I signed up for an interview time. Then she called me to let me know that she had lots of scheduled interview in the early morning and late afternoon. Then there was me, smack dab in the middle of it. She asked if I would come on site, so she could get some things done at the office in between the interviews taking place on campus. She said I’d also be talking to a couple of people-those people who would be working with the interns, which, from what she’d told me, sounded like a second interview.
I just spoke with her today, and she confirmed that, yes, that was my second interview. I stayed with them for a whopping hour and forty-five minutes. They’d better make me an offer, dammit! Longest damn interview I’ve ever heard of…didn’t even really go through a formal interview. We mostly joked around, and they admitted they had no idea what to ask me. It was actually quite enjoyable…though not at all in keeping with the typical “good” interview that still retains structure while not feeling forced, more conversational. This was pure goofiness.
The other “big” news is that I’ve found an apartment and staked my claim to it. It’s mine, ALL MINE! I paid the first month’s rent on it, so there’s pretty much no going back though I have yet to sign a lease.
Stats on the apartment: It’s on the third floor and overlooks two of the five ponds at Park Hill in Fairlawn. Being on the top floor, it has cathedral ceilings, which will increase this one-bedroom’s roominess. I have a bedroom, a bathroom, a living room, a small dining room, a kitchen, and even a little utility room for the washer and dryer. I’m super excited! It’s an expensive place to live because it’s all new and has a GREAT location, but I’ll be signing a two-year lease in order to bring the monthly rent down $20. It doesn’t seem like much, but over the span of two years, it adds up. *wink*
Oh, OH, and I should also be getting a balcony! HOW COOL IS THAT??!?!?
Anyhow, if you’d like to take a look, here’s the website. It’s the
Ashby Floorplan, and the link should take you right there.
So that’s my rather long update. Maybe I’ll try and drop in a little more often. :o)
Yeah, and bears. *shrugs* I couldn't think of anything better. So sue me.
