Baseball-card collecting jumped the shark when it turned into who had the most valuable cards and all that crap. Give me the bubble gum in the pack and Topps '87 series with the wood background. Bliss.
I am not kidding you, I have about 20 vending cases (yes, cases) of '87 Topps. That's about 250,000 little pieces of wood-grained bliss. But for me, it doesn't get better than '86.
Also, I think this picture best sums up the early-90s Yankees.
