We went to Hereford today, mainly because it was raining so hard that there was nothing we could reasonably do except look out of the windows at squelch city if we stayed at home.
As usual we went to our favourite Eco/Ethical/Veggy/Vegan watering hole a.k.a.
Cafe Green. The moment I stepped in it was apparent that something was wrong.
A smell of Fish....
The usual staff weren't there. What used to be the main menu board had been shunted to one side of the room and replaced by a huge board which itemised dozens of sea food dishes. All the art on the walls had been taken down. And instead of a an eclectic mix of world music, Folk and Jazz the sound system was playing wunnerful Radio One.
Evidently some from of commercial neutron bomb had been let off and taken the heart out of the place. We had a coffee and cake (which were good). We were there half an hour. Nobody came in. Tumbleweed blew through the place. We left.
I walked in despair through the rain, away from the shattered remains of one of my favourite cafes. Dunno if I'll go back there again.
Cafe Green has never had a big footprint on the web, but a little googling showed up a couple of significant snippets. A local gig site reported a change of management and I found a hurried blog comment from the Knit and Natter group telling people that the venue had been changed from the Cafe in November (no reason given).
So there you go. Another victim of the recession I guess. A shame. It was a happy, buzzing kind of place. RIP Cafe Green.
