Arthur C Clarke has died.
I think he, more than any other author, was responsible for my early interest in Science. I must have read most of his prolific output during my life. I liked his stuff not only because he was one of the few accurate prophets of the space age, but also because of the strong humanist streak that runs through much of his work.
As a bibliophile his death also almost certainly brings to an end a decade long search for his a first edition of his first successful space book: Interplanetary Flight: an introduction to astronautics Published by Temple Press in 1950. I've long sought for it in second hand book shops and now I suspect even if I find it, it will have soared well out of my price range.
RIP Arthur.
