I’ve given my skydiving self some good blog time, so I figure I’ll let the YA-bookish self come out to play. I have read a lot of new books in the past few weeks ( Read more... )

Diehard DWJ fan right here :) It's a long time since I read the book of Howl's Moving Castle and I only saw the film for the first time recently. I'd say they're both interesting in their own right. I couldn't remember enough of the book to find the film unsettling and watching it made me want to re-read the book.

Other things by DWJ include, as others have said, The Chrestomanci Series (The Nine Lives of Christopher Chant, Charmed Life, Witch Week and The Magicians of Caprona) and Hexwood. I also liked The Merlin Conspiracy and The Skiver's Guide (not fantasy, but a practical guide to, well, skiving, and still very funny).

She's also written a couple of more "grown-up" fantasy books which are sequential. I thought they were absolutely fantastic but sadly she's not written anymore. They are The Dark Lord of Derkholm and The Year of the Griffin. The premise of the first is absolute genius - a magical land held hostage by someone from a world like ours, with all the inhabitants forced to perform as a features of a tourist attraction, complete with requisite Dark Lord. It's one of my favourite books and I could re-read it forever.
