RIP Dan Snyder 2/23/78 - 10/5/03. You and your family are in all of our thoughts. We hope that you are in a better place and we also hope that your family will have the strength to get through this tragedy.
Atlanta Thrashers rising young NHL Superstar and 2003 NHL All-Star Game MVP Dany Heatley crashed his 2002 Ferrari after hitting a fixed object and spinning off into a brick pillar and an iron fence last Monday. Teammate and passenger Dan Snyder was thrown about 30 feet from the car, suffering a severe skull fracture in which he had surgery for on Monday. Snyder died in the hospital on Sunday, 6 days after the accident. He was in critical condition during the last days of his life.
Heatley suffered a broken jaw, a minor concussion, bruising of the lung and injuries to his left shoulder and right knee. He is scheduled to be in traffic court on October 10 to face charges of reckless driving, serious injury by vehicle, driving too fast for conditions, driving on the wrong side of the road and striking a fixed object. He can possibly face Involuntary Manslaughter charges now that Snyder has passed away.
For Hockey fans, after the losses of 2 of the Greatest Coaches our game has had in Herb Brooks (1980 Miracle On Ice - USA vs Russia Game) and Roger Neilson, and the tragic suicide of Roman Lyashenko, this is just another chapter in the NHL's gloomy offseason. My condolences and all hockey fans condolences go out to the Snyder family. Daniel Snyder was a kid who had potential, posting some good numbers with Owen Sound in the juniors, and great numbers with the Thrashers last year with the limited ice time he had, 10 goals and 14 points in just 36 games. Hypothetically speaking, had he played a full year, he would have had 20-25 goals and 35-40 points at that pace.
As for Heatley, his career might be done at this point. If he plays and reaches his potential, that would be an amazing feat. But this is always going to stick in his head, and I don't know if he'll be able to recover. The Thrashers organization is not looking too good as of now, and if this does have the effect that some are thinking it will have, the team is going downhill, and Ilya Kovalchuk might even be traded and the team could be contracted or moved in a few years, depending on if there's a work stoppage after the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expires.
