I'm curious about this, and I'm not getting any good results on my own so I figured I'd put this out there and see if anything comes of it... I'm looking for information on a gun, specifically where I can find any information on the soldier it was originally issued to during the Civil War. I know hand logs were kept of this information, at that time, and some places have extensive catalogs of these kinda of logs in digital format..or at least have access to the original information in some form.
Gun info:
Spencer Repeating / Rifle Co. Boston, Mass / Pat'd March 6, 1862
SERIAL# 56418
This is the best I can make it out as...the lettering is faded and difficult to read in places, but the serial number should be correct though, it's the easiest part to read on the whole thing. If any one knows of a place where I can find this sort of information free I'd be very grateful, as I've found places I can get it..but I'd have to pay. I don't want to do that unless that is my only real option. Thanks~
