Today, right now even,
Art Monk enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Who cares, right? I can't help it - I do. Very much, even.
I've liked football since middle school, when we moved to the D.C. area and got swept up in the Redskins bandwagon. There have been lots of players who I liked because they were good players, like Darrell Green, who is also to be inducted today. But I haven't admired any of them, except Art. He was very good, and exciting to watch and cheer, of course. Beyond that, he was quiet, hard working and modest. During one Super Bowl in which the team played, he was injured and could not play, so he joined a TV station to discuss various topics. From that I learned he was also intelligent and articulate.
Admire is apt word for me to use. I wanted to be talented, dedicated, smart, successful and humble too. Forget being like Mike, I wanted to be like Art. I'm very happy that after 7 years of rejection, the Hall has finally voted this fine human being in to its ranks.
