Room 221 [Friday evening]

Mar 18, 2011 21:24

Katniss had spent her morning experiencing her first hangover, then being harshly woken by Peeta.

And then she'd been pushed back to Fandom, but with plenty on her mind. Peeta was right: this time they had an advantage. They could train. They would train. They'd become Careers. She would work hard here, to keep her skills sharp and her muscles ( Read more... )

Wesley had been on his way back from the library when he'd decided to make a pit stop on the second floor to see if Katniss was back. And look at that, she was.

He knocked gently on the open door. "Hello," he said softly. "Are you -- I mean -- hello."

"Hi," she said, just as quietly as she turned to give him a tiny smile. "I'm sorry, I was going to call you. I just -- it was a bad trip."

"Oh, no, no, that's quite all right," Wesley said quickly. "No rush." Well, Wes, it wasn't like she was going to call you now. That would be pointless. "Do you, ah, need to talk about it?"

She sighed, gesturing him in. "They announced what the theme for the Quarter Quell is going to be this year," she said quietly.

Oh. That sounded... ominous. Something awful, knowing the Capitol, which Wesley felt like he did at this point.

"And?" he asked gently, coming over to take a seat on her bed.

"Tributes will be chosen from the pool of current victors," she said dully, looking down at her hands. "I'm the only female tribute alive from Twelve."

Oh. Oh, then that meant... that meant she was going to have to go back into the arena.

"Oh, Katniss," he murmured, and moved in to hug her. He wasn't really that tactile a person, but this seemed to call for a hug.

And Katniss, who also was not what one would ever term "a hugger," gratefully leaned against him, just a little. "Peeta's going in with me. And we have months to train. The reaping is in May, right after my birthday."

"Oh, god," Wesley breathed, shaking his head. Then he took a deep breath, pulling back a little bit. "Then -- then you should start training. Is Haymitch -- are you -- will Haymitch be coming to assist you, or are you going there, or...?"

"I'll be here until the reaping," she assured him. "I need everything Fandom can offer me right now. Luke's offered to teach me swords and knives, and I was going to ask teachers for help, too. Haymitch will be in touch. He and I are a united front, this time. Peeta too."

"Do you need -- I could help you with swords," he offered. "I'm not sure -- that might not -- will you need that? Or guns?"

Why didn't he know anything more useful?

"Swordwork is good," she said softly. "They won't give me a gun in the arena. It'd be over too quick."

She wasn't even sad anymore, really. That would kick in in May.

Wesley nodded knowingly. God, he was sad for her. And concerned, and just about every other adjective for negative emotions.

"We'll go over some of that, then," he said, doing his best to not get too emotional. "And -- what else could I teach you?" he asked, more to himself than to Katniss. "I suppose -- spellwork might not be particularly effective there, though it could be worth trying." Then, looking up, "And -- you did say people could make donations, send little parcels and whatnot? I could -- I could send you something -- "

"You'd have to contact Haymitch," she said, now actually considering that. "And it would be expensive, and it would have to meet the Gamemakers' approval." She chewed the inside of her lip, and thoughtfully added, "I could see if we could somehow get it to broadcast here. See if someone mechanically minded could fix it so you could watch it. Unless you'd rather not. But that way might be more helpful."

He nodded, bringing one hand up to his mouth and biting his knuckle thoughtfully. It was a gross habit, but it was a nervous tic. So sue him. "I could -- I could watch it," he said, his voice unexpectedly rough and raspy. "Or -- I could go there. Panem. If that would be easier for the, ah, the parcel-sending." He was sure he could scrounge up the money for it, if he explained it to his father. It wasn't like they had limited finances, and if it was Katniss' life in question...

"No." The force of her response actually startled her for a moment, but the very idea had stirred up all the panic she'd been repressing. "No, you absolutely cannot go to Panem," she added vehemently, more emotional than she'd been this entire time as she made sure to meet his eye. "Absolutely not. They -- I can't. You can't come. They'll hurt you. They'll take you. You're much too valuable to me, and they'll already go after Prim and Mother, and I can't have them even knowing you exist. Please."
