Room 221 [Friday evening]

Mar 18, 2011 21:24

Katniss had spent her morning experiencing her first hangover, then being harshly woken by Peeta.

And then she'd been pushed back to Fandom, but with plenty on her mind. Peeta was right: this time they had an advantage. They could train. They would train. They'd become Careers. She would work hard here, to keep her skills sharp and her muscles ( Read more... )

Luke had been wandering around town as was his habit when he got restless and bored and was on his way back up to his room when he spotted Katniss's open door. He snuck a peek inside and frowned, unsure if he should just leave her be or try to talk to her.

Eventually he decided on the latter. He tapped on the doorframe lightly. "Hey."

Katniss stirred, looking over at the door and carefully sitting up. "Hi, Luke," she said quietly, sighing a little. At this point, she wasn't even upset, because she wasn't letting herself be. She was just tired.

"Hey," he said again, leaning against the door frame. "I'm not interrupting something, am I?"

"Not really. I just got back from a trip home," she admitted carefully. "It could have gone better."

Understatement of the year.

Luke could relate to that considering he had almost died during his last trip home. "Okay, that sucks. You wanna talk about it or is it none of my business? It's totally cool if you don't want to."

Though it was kind of obvious from the way he stepped into the room that he was curious.

She eyed him cautiously, finally offering, "I've told you about the Hunger Games, right? How kids are forced to battle to the death on television, and I won last year's?"

It would be good to tell someone who wasn't actually from Panem and had no stake in this.

"Yeah, you've talked about it before," he said, nodding. "Kind of hard for me to forget something like that."

"Every twenty-five years, we have something called the Quarter Quell, where the Games are much worse -- the twenty-fifth anniversary, they had to elect the tributes. The fiftieth, there were twice as many. And this year is the seventy-fifth," she explained quietly. "And the tributes are being pulled from the victors. I'm the only female tribute still living from Twelve, so I'm going back into the arena this summer. So. Visit home could have gone better."

"Wait--you're going back?" Luke asked, frowning. "They're gonna make you kill people again?"

Honestly, the act itself wasn't all that shocking to Luke, considering his own family's violent history. He was still getting used to the fact that mortals could be just as violent and barbaric as the monsters were.

"I think the aim is for me to be killed, actually, but yes," she said, nodding. "I have months to train, at least, this time. That's something. And even if I tried to stay here or I ran away, they'd go after my family."

Again, that was something else Luke could understand. He would have done the same thing if he had been in Katniss's position and Annabeth was in danger. So he didn't bother to try to talk her out of going back.

"You have to go," he agreed after a few quiet moments. "What do you mean though, when you said the aim was for you to be killed?"

"I've been waiting for it for months. I won my Games because I sort of cheated," Katniss said with something almost like a smile. "They've been looking for a reason for me to be killed ever since districts started rebelling. I just didn't think they'd throw in twenty-two of their strongest citizens at the same time." She shrugged, adding, "I've made my peace with it, you know?"

"Yeah, I know what that's like," he admitted. "You could win again, though. You won once, cheating or not. You could do it again."

"Not if the boy going into the arena with me is going to live, and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he does," she corrected, shaking her head. "And I've made them mad enough that the gamemakers will be gunning for me anyway. I doubt they'll let me have a bow this time, or make the arena somewhere that I might be able to adapt. I'll have to train for anything and everything that could be thrown at me." She gave a sad little smile, and added, "But it's months off. I'll enjoy what I have left."

"Enjoy and train your ass off, you mean," Luke said, smiling slightly. It was a sad situation all around, but he was used to hearing about those. He didn't seem to find it too odd that Katniss wasn't freaking out, and respected her more for it. "This boy you're going to protect--does he know what you're doing?"

"He wouldn't allow it if he did," she said, shaking her head. "Peeta's kind of an idiot that way. And yeah -- I'll have to train my ass off. The tricky part is that there's no way of telling what's actually going to be in the arena. I'll have to try everything."
