Room 221 [Thursday evening]

Sep 02, 2010 22:27

Katniss had been on the island for over two months now. She still believed she was being watched, and she still looked over her shoulders for cameras (she'd found the obvious ones in the dorms, but she was fairly sure there had to be more.) And she'd assumed that the lack of communication from her family and Peeta was part of her exile -- another tactic to break her into submission.

Apparently, not so.

When Katniss arrived back at the room after class, she found a package, and atop it, a few letters. One -- which she opened immediately -- was from her sister. In her letter, Prim talked about school, about Lady and Buttercup, about their mother. It was obvious that she was being careful with her words, and Katniss had to wonder about the duress under which Prim might have written.

The next letter was from Haymitch, simply saying that he hoped she wasn't lying around being lazy wherever she was. That was rich, coming from Haymitch, and she reconsidered sending him a bottle of spirits from this time and country.

The last letter was from Peeta, as was the package. The letter she set aside, ignoring it for the time being (because she didn't want to read what he'd had to put to slip it past the Capitol, if they were censoring her mail.) Inside the box, however, she found what she expected she'd find: a half-dozen beautifully-decorated cookies, and some cheese rolls. Her favorite.

So her evening would be spent sitting on her floor, appreciatively eating cookies, and studiously not reading that letter. She'd save it for when she felt up to whatever Peeta might have written.

[door is open and cookies are shareable!]
