Katniss had been given her own squad -- or, rather, had been placed in one with a few others. Everyone was dressed in the standard District 13 soldier uniform, though she was in her Mockingjay outfit.
And they were all bored.
Boggs, with his communicator, was keeping them updated on the events back in Thirteen and on the front lines, but as for the 'star squad,' they were being kept in limbo, lest anyone harm the precious Mockingjay or her companions.
Katniss, for her part, was ready to kill something, especially if they stuck a camera in her face again.
Jaina
Jaina was maybe a little more irritated than bored.
Actually, no, scratch that, she was a lot more irritated than bored. She knew she was going to get into trouble for being here instead of at home, she'd been training at Thirteen to be able to fight, and she was here. Bored. And irritated.
She was doing her best not to take it out on anyone who wasn't in charge of that decision, though. Instead she was trying to keep herself busy, checking supplies, doing drills, counting blades of grass when she was desperate enough...
Luke
All this waiting was hell on the ADHD. He had given up trying to keep himself busy and had now taken to obnoxiously jiggling his leg up and down in order to get rid of the pent up energy he had.
This was borderline torture for someone like him.
Katniss
"I feel like if I were a teacher I'd tell you to take a lap to get rid of some of that," Katniss said quietly, slightly amused as she watched his leg.
Luke
"Man I would love to run around right now," Luke said, slowing the movement of his leg now that he was aware of it. "Sorry if I'm being annoying."
Katniss
"You're fine," she said, smiling a tiny bit. "I think all of us are a little restless."
Luke
"Yeah I've noticed," he said, looking over at the cranky Jedi. "I'm beginning to think Coin is purposely trying to drive us crazy."
Katniss
"Maybe just me," Katniss said, shaking her head. "I think if literally any other person could have been her Mockingjay, she'd have gotten rid of me a long, long time ago."
Luke
"You can kind of take that as a compliment, you know," Luke told her. "If she wants you gone that badly that means she must find you at least a little bit threatening."
Luke would consider that a compliment.
Katniss
She smiled faintly. "I think she thinks I want her spot," she said, making a face. "Couldn't pay me to be president once this is all over."
Luke
"It doesn't seem like a very pleasant job, does it?" Luke said, smirking. "You have done pretty well in the leadership position, though, with this whole Mockingjay thing. I know it's not your favorite thing in the world, but you do know how to take point when you need to."
Katniss
"I'm kind of crappy at it," she said, shaking her head. "You know how many propos they've tried to do with me? I'm good at shooting things, Luke. That's all I want to do. Someone else can lead."
Luke
Luke thought that the fact that she was willing to give up her power was a pretty good sign of leadership, but he kept his mouth shut since she obviously hated the whole thing and didn't share his love for power.
"I think that kind of attitude is why you haven't met with some 'accident' yet at Coin's hands," Luke told her. "The lady's scary."
Wesley
Wesley was cleaning guns. They were clean, because, well, he'd already spent a great deal of time cleaning them. But he was cleaning them again, because there was nothing else to do.
God, this was frustrating.
Gale
"I think," Gale said, looking over at Wesley from where he was counting bullets, "that when we finally see action, the Peacekeepers won't know whether to duck or admire the cleanness of our weapons."
Wesley
Wesley looked up, surprised. "What?" Then he blushed. "Oh. Yes, quite."
He couldn't help feeling faintly awkward around Gale, considering how close Gale was to Katniss and the fact that Wesley wasn't sure just how much Gale knew about him.
"Well. Either way, it's in our favor," he offered as a feeble attempt at a quip.
Gale
It wasn't that he already knew that much about the other boy; Gale was just observant, and knew Katniss better than he knew anyone else.
So. The awkward was probably warranted.
"Maybe we'll blind them with the sparkling of our guns," he said with a faint smile.
Wesley
"Let's hope," Wesley said dryly, returning the small smile. "Or with the, ah. Actual guns."
Katniss did shoot through the eye, after all, albeit not typically with guns.
Anakin Anakin could just hear Obi-Wan in his head telling him to wait with patience.
He'd hated when Obi-Wan had told him that, but he was an adult and should behave like one instead of like someone who wanted to climb the walls.
So he was mentally reciting all of the curse words he knew in every language, trying to decide which ones best applied to Snow and Coin while he worked on modifying one of the long-range rifles to better suit his hands.
Jaina
Jaina could tell she wasn't the only one going stir crazy, but in most cases she had no idea how to help that. "There is no mind-numbing boredom, there is only the Force," she said, and while that wasn't actually part of the Jedi code, it should be.
Anakin Anakin snorted. "I wish I'd brought playing cards."
Jaina
"Same. I only brought things that might be useful for fighting, since I sort of thought we might be doing something..." At least she was good and didn't say it too loudly.
Anakin "It'll change," Anakin assured her. "This can't exactly be riveting television."
Jaina
"Great. Maybe they'll cancel us and we can get to fighting and being helpful like we're supposed to be," she said. "I can't go home and say I came all the way here just to be on TV."
Anakin "Because everyone there knows you're such an attention addict," Anakin said dryly.
Jaina
"Have I mentioned that I did my absolute best to skip this part of things when I was playing goddess, and that I did so by running off to another galaxy?" Jaina said.
Anakin "Guess you didn't run quite far enough," Anakin teased.
The public relations had been his least favorite part of being a Jedi as well.
Jaina
Jaina grumbled something she should really not repeat. "So what do you think, want to see if we can find somewhere to spar? Might as well try some productivity."
Anakin "Yes, please," Anakin said, standing up and stretching his arms over his head.
Gale
Gale was perched where he could keep an eye on nearly everyone -- especially Katniss -- and see the furthest off. He was counting bullets, because there frankly wasn't much else for him to do to make him feel even remotely productive. But he was trying.
Katniss
Katniss was pacing. She'd been pacing for about an hour, patiently trying to make her steps sound lighter and lighter until there was no sound at all.
When that stopped being amusing, after about three minutes, she began checking her arrows.
This pattern continued for awhile, because there wasn't anything else to do, and she was itching for combat.
Finnick
Finnick was carefully weaving together nets, biding them across his trident intricately so he could fling them if necessary.
Onto what, he had no idea. But he could.
Firekeeper Wolves did not handle being bored very well. Mostly because instinct dictated that boredom meant they should sleep. But sleep wasn't an option, not with a war going on, even if it was a war they weren't being allowed to participate in at this point in time. Instead, Blind Seer prowled restlessly while Firekeeper checked her arrows, as well as the gun she'd so thoughtfully been provided with.
Katniss
After a few hours of sitting on the edges of the warzone, waiting to strike, a figure dressed in a rebel uniform approached the assembled group. When he lifted his helmet and shook out his hair, though, Katniss felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Peeta.
"Why'd they send you?" Boggs asked, stepping in front of Katniss to be safe.
"Coin's orders," Peeta replied. "She thinks this could use a little livening up, I guess."
And that was when Katniss knew that Coin had no intention of her being able to come home.
Wesley
Wesley stared.
And instinctively drew closer to Katniss.
He felt terrible for Peeta for what the Capitol done to him, but Katniss remained his priority, and he didn't want any accidents.
Katniss
Katniss reached a hand out to Wesley's arm at that movement, watching Peeta all the while.
"It's fine," she said quietly. "He's fine. There's plenty of us here." She glanced up at Wesley, dropping her voice even more, and added, "Coin's using the Capitol's weapons against me now, isn't she?"
Wesley
Wesley didn't once take his eyes off Peeta. He didn't trust him for a minute.
"So it seems," he murmured, barely moving his lips at all. Careful to keep his voice neutral, he asked softly, "You've never mentioned that he was particularly strong in battle, have you?"
Katniss
"You watched the Games," was her answer, her gaze flicking back to Peeta as he found a spot to sit. "He was the brains. I'm the muscle. So there's no reason to send him, especially like this."
Wesley
"No," he said softly. "No, I suppose there isn't."
And he was right back to staring at Peeta.
Luke
Luke had his own ideas of why Coin sent Peeta here, and none of them were good. Still, Luke was willing to give him a chance, despite what he had done, so the look he gave Peeta when he walked in wasn't completely filled with suspicion.
He still planned on keeping an eye on him though. It would have been stupid if he didn't.
Anakin Anakin had learned to trust Luke's instincts on things during the Games, so his eyes went to him when Peeta arrived and his eyebrows arched up in a silent "now what?"
Luke
Luke didn't see Peeta as much of a threat at the moment and, even if he did, there wasn't much they could do considering Coin wanted him here. Since Wesley seemed to have the overprotective thing handled, Luke gave Anakin a small shrug of his shoulder and didn't move from where he was.
Anakin Anakin moved his hand in what he hoped would be a fairly universal symbol for "go talk to him". He would have done it himself but he was old and figured that Peeta would want to have absolutely nothing to do with him.
Luke
Luke got that message loud and clear. He gave Anakin a nod before moving towards Peeta.
If Peeta flipped out and went crazy on him, Anakin better feel real bad.
Peeta
Peeta wasn't exactly thrilled with having to be here -- much less with how people seemed afraid of him. He knew what he was, now. He just didn't know how to stop it. Or what was real, or what was what the Capitol had given him to think.
So he found a spot to sit far away from Katniss, for her own safety and his.
Luke
The last time Luke had talked to someone with Peeta's face it didn't end real well so he figured that there was nowhere to go but up. Hopefully. If not he'd blame it all on Anakin.
"Uh, hey," Luke said, trying to look as friendly and non-threatening as possible. You know, for someone who had a gun and a sword on him. "Mind if I sit down?"
Peeta
Peeta looked over at Luke, eyes a little uncertain as he tried not to actually twitch. "Sure," he said carefully, fiddling with his belt a little.
Luke
Luke smiled and sat down, making sure not to sit too close to Peeta lest he make the other boy uncomfortable. "I'm Luke. One of Katniss's friends from her school."
Peeta
Peeta squinted at him a little before hesitantly offering, "You taught her about swords so she could kill me with something other than her arrows. Is that right?"
He didn't know anymore. Everything was fuzzy and wrought over and under itself in his memories.
Luke
Luke shook his head. "No. I mean, I did teach her about swords, but Katniss was trying to protect you. She was always trying to protect you."
Peeta
Peeta shook his head, almost trying to clear it. "But she wants me dead. Why would she protect me just to kill me later?"
Luke
"Exactly. She wouldn't," Luke said. "She was trying to protect you because you're her friend and she didn't want to see you hurt. I watched those Games, man. She risked her own life to keep you safe multiple times."
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce It took Wesley a long time to approach Peeta, mainly because that would mean leaving Katniss' side for even a moment and, believe it or not, that was something he was hoping not to have to do again for a while. But eventually, he did it, and hovered uncomfortably while clearing his throat as he tried to work up the nerve to speak.
Peeta
Peeta glanced up, frowning a little as he tried to place Wesley's face in his mind.
"You're Katniss's," was what he came up with, finally. There should have been a noun on the end of that, but he couldn't remember what Wesley's affiliation with her had been. It was enough that he was with Katniss, though, and Peeta shifted a little away, glaring.
Wesley
Er. Yes. Well.
Wesley ignored the implications there and tried for civilized discourse. "One could say the same for everyone here," he pointed out gently. "We're all connected to her in some way or another."
Because that was helpful.
"Hello, Peeta."
Peeta
"Hello. Are you going to try to murder me for her?" Peeta asked almost pleasantly, his voice biting.
Wesley
Wesley shifted uncomfortably, but kept his ground.
"I fail to see how it would be in her best interests for me to do any such thing," he said finally, coolly. "Nor do I have any personal desire to do it myself."
Karla Karla was helping to organize portable first aid kits to be used in the field. She kind of didn't see the point, considering all of the combat medics had already gone off with the rest of the soldiers, but it was something to do to keep from going stir-crazy, so she did it.
Besides, balking at pointless commands only got her rations reduced. Considering she hadn't explained anything about her Jewel, she was already getting less than her proper caloric intake anyway.
After hours of watching them sit around doing nothing, Karla had mostly stopped paying attention to what was on the screen. She was bored enough on her own, thanks, she didn't need to watch other people's boredom, too. It wasn't until Bogg's said something in a sharp and urgent tone that her eyes went back to the screen.
To Peeta.
Bloody Hell.
"What the Hell does Coin think she's playing at now?"
Ghanima
"She is trying to create drama for the viewing public," Ghanima replied, coming over from where she'd been ration kits. "Most likely to provoke Katniss into doing something rash."
Karla "Great," Karla said, rolling her eyes. "Let me guess. So she'll have footage of the mockingjay freaking out or fucking up while Coin's people go in and win the war. I hate politics."
Or, at least, politicians.
Ghanima
"Katniss is too well trained to 'freak out' at this point," Ghanima corrected. "It is the last thing Coin wants."
"What she wants, is for Katniss as a martyr in her cause. Will she sacrifice Peeta or Gale to save herself? Will she take a bullet meant for one of them? It is still the High Drama of the Hunger Games, but this time used by the rebellion."
