well, it's been an interesting day since yesterday. i cooked last night at don and philo's house, but when i say i i really mean several people, because there were eight of us in total and i think everyone made something. david and elka brought and grilled tofu kebabs from tefle and two bottles of wine; peter peterson (the cocoa exporter and amateur botanist) brought fresh baby corn and made a sauce for them, as well as passionfruits for dessert and two bottles of wine, don made a tomato salad, and don and philo made garlic butter and fresh bread to go with it, and then i made spaghetti and brought two bottles of wine and four loaves of tea bread, so really it was very communal cooking. their kitchen was packed, or as philo called it, cozy. dinner was lovely, and there were two people there i had never met--michael, a ghanian biochemist, and petre, a dutch guy who can't handle his alcohol and does tilapia farming in the north of ghana. anyway..it was a lot of fun, and i stayed there until almost midnight. i drank too much wine at dinner, because a) i didn't drink any while i was cooking, and b) david was imbibing a little too much and refilling my glass when i wasn't looking. not that i minded; i don't think you can go wrong with good company like them. but it was funny..anyway, elka drove me home and as we stopped at my house, there was a wagon thing (boys use them here to transport coconuts and bread) with a man on it, and about 20 frantic people, and i got out of the car only to hear them ask david and elka to please take their father to the hospital because he was dying. i have no idea what was wrong or anything, but they took the guy and i hope everything was okay.
i got home and i got sick. i don't know if it was the wine or the passionfruit, but i think it was the passionfruit, because once it was out of my system i didn't get sick anymore. there was plenty of spaghetti to be extricated, but it stayed there, so i think i'm not going to eat passionfruit anytime soon.
today don and philo and david and elka and i were talking about going boating on the river, but when i went to don and philo's around 11:30, nobody answered the gate. that either means that nobody heard it, or that they had already left, or that they weren't even awake yet. i'm betting on the latter..midnight is late in ghana, especially after 8 people down 5 bottles of wine.
so..i went to the health farm instead, which is just past their house, and got a tour. i saw that an eyebrow wax was just $10 (all their prices are in US dollars..strange) and so i was going to get my eyebrows waxed, but you have to get a massage or something at the spa first, and prices there start at like sixty bucks. so..no health farm for me, but it was interesting to go look around.
and so..i've been here for a while. first i ate lunch and then i waited for the internet cafe to open, and now i'm here reading waiter rant (www.waiterrant.net), a really great blog about being a waiter. i guess after this maybe i'll grab something small to eat here and go home and read or sleep or something. whoo!
hope you are all having a good weekend..take care.
